Cocktail hour snack

Finally mrs.jkr, on February 17, 2014 at 8:49 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 15

I hate it when people fill up during cocktail hour because there are all these great snacks (plus I would want to be in on that deliciousness) I was thinking of a flavored popcorn bar... like Popcorn with seasoned salts in shakers [ranch flavoring, powdered cheese flavor, seasoned salt, regular salt, sugar--for kettle corn, etc]

Does that sound like a good idea? What other flavors would you think of having?

Popcorn with shakers is a neat idea, especially if you can get a popcorn machine and guests get their own bag to fill up. Personally I like having food at cocktail hour, just little appetizers things since you never know how long it will actually be until dinner. Don't forget that people eat a different times so some of your guests will probably be hungry earlier then others.

Guests will pig out at cocktail hour if the food is there. They just do. Especially if it is buffet style and is not a passed app by a server. We were at a wedding where the couple counted how many people were there and ordered two apps of each item for each guest - BUT SERVED IT BUFFET STYLE. Despite the fact it was OBVIOUS that there were only enough cheese skewers, meat balls, and chicken fingers for 80 guests, after 25-30 guests went through the line, the food was gone.

And what did the piggish guests say, "Oh I thought they would bring more." SO, 50 guests had to sit starving for almost 2 hours....

@Jennifer: I don't think it's ridiculous for a guest to assume the buffet was going to be refilled. I certainly would as that's always been the case in any wedding I've been to. Unless it were someone's private house or something. Two of each item is not very much.

@Elanor: It was at the couples home and they tried so hard to make it nice and save money. They even let everyone know beforehand the situation with the apps and that the dinner would be simple. The grooms family attacked the app buffet and it was very embarrassing for the bride. They were a very young couple and it never occurred to them that people would take more than what they did.

This is really weird because I was just having this same conversation with a girlfriend of mine earlier this evening while we were getting our nails done!

I love the idea of a popcorn bar with different shakers, I was thinking of doing mine as a late night snack when people get peckish after all the dancing but I see nothing wrong with it during cocktail hour.

People can mingle, have drinks and snack on popcorn... sounds great to me!!

I LOVE that idea!!! I may even have to steal it Smiley winking it's not very filling and would be cheap to make, and realistically could be made the day before! Thanks for sharing!!!

I probably wouldn't grab popcorn if served during the cocktail hour, because I wouldn't want to spend the rest of the night with shells and popcorn bits stuck between my teeth. However, if it was made available as a late night snack/favor, I'd be all over it.

I attended a wedding where they had an antique popcorn machine with fresh popped popcorn during cocktail hour - it was a great small nibble. I'm trying to think if they had anything else out then, food-wise and I honestly can't remember, so yep, I'd say that is a great idea.

I wouldn't eat popcorn unless I was starving if it was before the reception. Plus I wouldn't want people/kids with messy hands touching my dress Smiley smile

I like this idea! I'd also maybe include some fruit and maybe cheese squares or something as well, for those who might not like popcorn or want something a bit healthier.

Blissful has a good point about it can make hands greasy and dirty. Maybe provide wet naps so that people can use them to wipe their hands if they want.
