Cocktail Reception

Miche, on February 4, 2020 at 9:57 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 5

Hi! I wanted to get some insight/ advice on how to time our cocktail reception. We will be having a destination wedding in the Bahamas. The ceremony will begin at 3:30 PM and will be done by 4:00-4:15 PM. We will then have a break until it is time for our cocktail reception with hors d'oeuvres, desserts, DJ, and an open bar (basically the party aspect). We will still have the traditional first dance, speeches, and the other fun stuff (throwing the garter & bouquet). We love this idea because then we would only take a small portion of our guests day but have them back with us to party the night away! So my question is if we should start the cocktail reception at 8 pm or 9 pm? Also, any suggestions on how to word it on our invites?

I would really reconsider. Asking someone to attend a destination wedding is a huge commitment and typically entails a higher level of hosting. I think providing a meal is the least you could do.

Where we live it's actually a short 30 min flight away. Many of my guests frequent there multiple times a year because it is that close. I also discussed it with several of my guests (young and not so young) and everyone seemed to love the idea more than me! It was actually suggested to me by two of my guests so it seems to really be quite popular. Truthfully, I had never heard of it but I loved the idea and it gets straight to the fun and not so stuffy.

Have you ever attended to type of reception? Do you have a suggestion on start times?

As someone who had a DW, I agree with this 100%.

I agree. Even if you aren't having a DW, a break is such a pain between the ceremony & reception.

The issue is I have read on other forums that you have to do a break in order to allow people time to eat independently. We will all be staying at the same hotel and there is loads to do and eat during that time. Originally I wasn't going to invite many people to the ceremony (just to the party aspect) but so many requested to see the ceremony that I ended up including on the invite.
