Coffee-stained real touch flowers--holy crap this DIY idea worked!

MrsBest2B, on November 16, 2015 at 9:07 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 18

I can't believe this worked. It was a test and it worked! I decided I was going to try and create my own flower hair comb using true touch flowers from Hobby Lobby (which were 50% off last week and probably will be again soon). Their white was way to white and their "cream" was more like a pale yellow. I wanted more of a champagne color. 15 minutes soaking in fresh brewed brew and voila! The photo with two flowers side by side are the fake true-touch flowers, one white and one after the staining. The single flower is the real rose which was my inspiration. They're still a little more yellow, but it's much better than what they had in the store. Maybe a little more soak time would brown it up a bit too, but I don't want to go overboard. Also some of the glue melted in the hot coffee, but it's still full intact and an easy fix if I needed. I think it's a successful DIY for $3 a flower!

I've heard of tea staining to make fabric less white and slight antiqued, which I was going to try. As I researched how to do it, some people said that coffee produces a darker color. Since the true touch has a coating on it (maybe rubber?), I thought the coffee would work better.

Thanks! I'm happy and surprised. I honestly hadn't even thought of the glue melting until it happened but also, everywhere I read said to use hot water. I'm sure soaking them longer in cold would've worked too. If I want to deepen the color I may try that too.

Looks great! I can't see the yellow you are seeing in the flower. Have you tried it with tea? Maybe you will get closer to the color you are after.

    Wow, that's a great outcome!

Would it be crazy to try to do this to white satin shoes?

Tea and instant coffee also work. I stain material all the time when making primitive holiday crafts.

The bottom rose picture is a real rose Smiley smile it was just my inspiration for the champagne color. The top two are the fake ones, one pre-staining, one after.

WOW those look great. Maybe just dip the tips or paint some coffee on and let it sit for awhile to get a contrast look. But they look great!!!!!!
