Cold Sore...

Lolerskates84, on February 19, 2016 at 11:33 AM Posted in Planning 1 34

Ok I know this is a whiney, possibly irrational #firstworldproblems type question but I'm starting to get a little concerned. Maybe I'm overthinking it.

I usually get one cold sore every 4ish years. Recently I've had several in the last few months... probably stress (?) It's freaking me out because I'm not used to it.

Anyway, what to do if I get one around the wedding? I've done a great job avoiding kissing FH when I get one, but don't think that will be possible on the wedding day lol.

Today I got one and I'm trying a product called Compeed which I've never tried before. It is a clear adhesive patch. Seems like I could put this on if I do get one and we can still kiss?

Has anyone come across this "issue" before? What did you use or what do you recommend if you get a cold sore that day? Has anyone used Compeed or a similar product before?

ABREVA!!!!!!!!!!! Its $20 for a small tube, but if you put it on the minute you feel that tingle. Its gone in 2 days.

I still can kiss FH because he doesn't get them. Lipstick should cover it if it isn't HUGE.

DH gets them and treats them with lysine. He can feel them coming on and starts taking it. It has helped him a ton. They are less frequent and don't look as bad.

Honestly, of all the products I've tried, plain old Carmex works the best for me. I can usually feel them coming on and apply religiously. You can also try lysine- it comes in a tablet you take orally or a cream you can apply directly on the cold sore.

Also there are things that are triggers for me- too much sun exposure, too much cold exposure, chocolate, acidic foods/drinks, and stress is probably one of the biggest ones. If you can figure out if there are specific things that trigger them try to avoid those things as much as possible leading up to your wedding day.

Cold sores suck so much, I'm sorry you've been having them more recently!

I've used Abreva, it still takes 10+ days for me :/ I'm hesitant to kiss him with that on bc the virus can still be passed on.

I usually take a ton of L-Lysine and it stays small so I'm not as much concerned about how it will look, I can cover it with make-up....I'm more concerned with what I can do to not pass it to him.

I've always had great results with Abreva. It works best if you apply it as soon as you feel the tingle, like @Kathryn said.

Lysine is amazing! As soon as I feel one start to come on I start popping lysine. I'm going to start taking this about a week before the wedding so I don't end up with a sore on our wedding day.

From my knowledge, cold sores are contagious from the first time you feel it until it is completely healed.

I'm more concerned with not passing the virus than reducing healing time or covering it, bc after dealing with these for a while I'm pretty sure it will still last 10 days for me unless there is a magical cure.

Anyone ever use a patch that covers it? Any specific brand?

Thanks much for the advice Smiley smile

You can take lysine daily to avoid getting them, it's a supplement you can get at cvs/Walgreens etc. if you had them for a while, chances are he has the virus already, but he's just not showing the symptoms.

I got the worst cold sore in my live last year (like 5 or 6 blisters at once on my lower lip). I went to the doctor and she gave me something antiviral. It was pretty effective, but I was so tired, so I would only ever use it again as a last resort.

Ugh I just got one and I know It's from stress. I never had one until j started dating FH he got one kissed me and BAM now I'm cursed. I get them maybe 2-3 times a year now. He hasn't had one since. It makes me mad. I've tried abreva and it was okay. I just got the Carmex sold sore treatment to see if that helps. It numbs the whole area. The past few days it hasn't gotten worse, and had been getting better. Normally when I get them I end up with a massive hole in my lip. It's gross. I've been using that with a combination of loads of normal Carmex.

Well for the day, you really only have to worry about the "sealing the deal" kiss. DH always gets them on one side, so we avoid kissing, but once or twice we have kissed on just the unaffected side. It sounds weirder than it is. We do kisses on the cheek too.

What everyone else said about Lysine. Just start taking lysine pills 2 weeks before and you'll be fine. The pills are really good for both preventing and treating.

Honestly, just ask your doctor for a prescription for Valtrex. It will work better than any OTC treatment and give you peace of mind.

DH gets them and has always used Abreva until he met me. He still uses it, however, when he says he can feel one coming in I make him use my tee tree oil and it never pops up like when he uses Abreva.

I have a prescription for Acyclovir (generic Valtrex). It works GREAT. I always keep it on hand at home so as soon as I feel it coming I start taking them. Usually it barely turns into more than a little bump. I also put lavender essential oil on it to help it heal faster. I've heard Frankincense also works but haven't tried that yet.

I take valtrex. I've gotten cold sores since I was a baby (one of my mom's friends kissed me on the nose when she had one). I get them about 6-8 times a year, do my doc put me on valtrex. I take 500mg twice a day when I can feel one coming on, and continue until it starts to heal. If I catch it early enough (within 2 hours of it starting) it won't even develop.

@Niki, would I ask for Valtrex for preventative or for treatment?

@Tia...I've never tried tee tree oil, I'll look into that

@ Mrs. Kassy, I thought about just taking Lysine as the day approaches, maybe I will do that to be on the safe side and go from there

    Thanks much Smiley smile

Definitely take Lysine weeks before the wedding! When I feel lone coming, I take double (sometimes triple) the amount of lysine in the instructions. Also, I dab rubbing alcohol and Witch Hazel on the spot every 2 hours. Alcohol dries it out and witch hazel brings down the swelling. So it is gone in a couple days.

There's a medicine you can take everyday that helps keep them away (: I forget the name but it's like a pill. A friend takes them but said if you miss a day you'll get one

    ETA: spelling

I take Lysine supplements daily and near my period I also automatically put abreva on. I get them often when I am stressed or close to my period. When I am close to my period I amp up the lysine to 2 pills per day.
