Cold Sore...

Ok I know this is a whiney, possibly irrational #firstworldproblems type question but I'm starting to get a little concerned. Maybe I'm overthinking it. I usually get one cold sore every 4ish years. Ok I know this is a whiney, possibly irrational #firstworldproblems type question but I'm starting to get a little concerned. Maybe I'm overthinking it.

I usually get one cold sore every 4ish years. Recently I've had several in the last few months... probably stress (?) It's freaking me out because I'm not used to it.

Anyway, what to do if I get one around the wedding? I've done a great job avoiding kissing FH when I get one, but don't think that will be possible on the wedding day lol.

Today I got one and I'm trying a product called Compeed which I've never tried before. It is a clear adhesive patch. Seems like I could put this on if I do get one and we can still kiss?

Has anyone come across this "issue" before? What did you use or what do you recommend if you get a cold sore that day? Has anyone used Compeed or a similar product before?

@lolerskates I know you didn't direct that at me, but... You can get valtrex in a preventive dose or a rescue dose. Preventive is usually 250mg, and usually only prescribed if you have an ongoing issue. I've taken it for 14 years, originally as a preventive because they were really frequent. Now I just use it as a rescue med.

Ok cool, I will do that for sure. I like this Compeed patch so far, it's pretty discreet without make-up and not annoying at all.

Think I will do a combo: take lysine and if it comes request Valtrex . if it is around the day of use this patch. I think I can still give him a peck with it on.

If I get another one in the meantime I'll try the tee tree oil and witch hazel to see how effective those are. Don't want to experiment close to the actual day!

Okay feeling better about this now that I have multiple solutions confirmed. Hope i don't have to worry about it tho lol

Valtrex (or valacyclovir) was what was subscribed when I had my serious case last year. I just looked it up and apparently I had 2 1 gram tablets twice a day (so 4 grams). It seriously knocked me out, but it worked. I tend to get really tired from antibiotics as well though, so maybe my reaction is not standard.

I never had one until I started dating FH. I did feel the tingle in my lip, but I had no idea what it was until it was too late! I used Abreva, but it still took a long time to heal because I bought it two days later. I only had it happen one time, but I am ready in case it happens again!!!

Talk to your doctor about over the counter creams and pills. I too suffer from them and the prescription ones work great!

Everyone I know with coldsoars uses valtrex if they feel one coming on. Seems to work like a charm. Even for my 12 year old nephew who gets the really bad ones that spread to his chin.

Mine also come out when I'm stressed (final exams, work, etc). Problem is I sometimes get the blisters near my eye. The last time it happened my eye doctor suggested talking to my medical doctor about suppressive therapy. I did that for a year & now take Acyclovir at the first sign tingling/itching. We can't afford for the blisters to actually get in my eye. You might talk to your doctor about trying suppressive therapy for about a month before the wedding.

For blisters near my mouth I have found Blistex applied frequently works just as well as Abreva and is much cheaper. BTW, the Acyclovir is about $4 with my insurance.

I take acyclovir for herpetic whitlow. Don't ask. :/ I take 400 mg 2x/day to prevent outbreaks. It sucks big time, because if I don't take it, I outbreak when I ovulate or start my period, so I might get 3-4 outbreak free days a month without it.

The acyclovir prevents them, though I still occasionally feel one try to happen, it never proceeds to actually creating blisters. Just make sure to up your water as it's hard on the kidneys. I've had zero side effects, but I rarely experience them anyway.

I get one every so often in the same spot when I'm really sick. It happened once when my lips got super sunburnt and ever since it'll randomly pop up. Best fix I've found to lessen the time is popping lysine but also crush it up and make a paste and dab it on with a qtip and let it just sit. It'll get kind of dried up it's fine. Keep applying it as much as you can, obviously not something you're gonna want to go to work with but it'll work wonders I promise.

DS takes Valtrex as soon as he feels it coming on. Talk to your doctor about getting a prescription for it to use just prior to the wedding. He also uses abreva, but if can catch it really early with Valtrex it doesn't usually get too far.

If it’s bad enough, make a dr appt and get a prescription for Valtrex. It’s generic now so not as expensive.

As others have recommended, Abreva! You can also get store-brand, I've gotten the Walgreens brand of it and it's just as effective. I also take L-lysine every day, 500mg a day but it's recommended to take 1000mg+, I just forget to take the second pill. I haven't had one in 2 years since I started taking Lysine, I used to have them every 3-6 months. This is important: once the cold sore heals, slather it in Vitamin E oil multiple times every day, it will help the scarring to go down and smooth/soften your lips in general!
