College Students on a College Budget

Kayla, on April 7, 2016 at 2:41 AM Posted in Planning 0 14

Hello ladies,

I am recently engaged to an amazing man. We are both young at 20 years old and are having to get married during college due to graduate medical school and such. Anyways, I would love to hear from other couples who got married during college - I'm nervous about the stress of school and a marriage and would appreciate any encouragement. Also, what did you do to cut costs for your wedding? We are planning with a $3,000 budget. Thanks in advance!

Congrats! With that budget, I'd either do a non-meal time reception or just a very small elopement.

I am about to get married for the second time.my first time i was in collage, raising a baby and married.we ended up just going to court house that time and tried to plan a wedding later (didnt get that far).

This time around is different,we do have 2 kids my fieonce is militery and at a different duty station and im here planning our wedding taking care of the kiddos.the wedding planning for me is more stressful then the rest of it.though our budget is bigger we have been cutting costs.we skipped on videographer, band, planner, ice sculpture and a few other things also hes wearing his dress blues(free) a friend of mine is a hair styles and shes doing mine and my girls hair for a discounted price.so we are skipping out on some things as well

Hi there. With a small budget, I think the most important thing is to keep the guest list small. You can also have your wedding during an off-peak month or day (i.e. Sunday). We are having a Sunday brunch wedding and have saved a ton that way. Best of luck.

Congrats! Just a quick question, what do you mean by "we are young but having to get married because of school?" I'm not sure of any situation where it's beneficial to get married before starting grad school, and definitely not one where it necessary. Maybe you can explain that a bit more. For example, I'll be getting married at 24 right before starting medical school, going in knowing full well it will actually hurt me in the financial aid processes (but this is our choice, not something we have to do...)

As to your original question, you can afford a courthouse ceremony with a nice meal with your nearest and dearest at a restaurant afterwards. Look at it this way:

Dress (depends on how fancy you want to get, but you can find great deals at DB's $99 sale): $300

Suit: $150 (or he wears something he already owns)

Photographer: $1k (ask for just a few hours, not a whole normal wedding package)

Rings: $500 (if you both go plain, depending on the style you want can probably get this down a bit)

Restaurant reception: $1k (all that's left in your budget. this will get you a really awesome dinner with drinks and cake for 10-15 people, don't forget to count your groom and yourself).

It can be done. I am in college right now. My FH and I have done all the decorations ourselves, including the flowers which saved us a lot. Watch for sales, Michaels will run sales for 40-50% off and have a coupon on their website for an additional 20% off the entire purchase. David's Bridal has very pretty dresses for $99. I would suggest sitting down with your FH and decide what is most important to you that you can "splurge" on and what is not so important. There are ways to do it just don't get discouraged.

Date twin! I'm graduating on December and then getting married two weeks later ... We are going to try to do as much planning as we can over our summer break. I also have some great bridesmaids and a very involved FH so they've been a big help.

It's going to be stressful, but I keep reminding myself that we are preparing for a lifetime and not just a day.

As for the budget, your biggest factor will be the guest list ... Keep it small and figure out what is most important to you so you know where to skimp and splurge!

I'm 19 and will be 20 when we get married. Look for as many things as you can for cheap. I'm having a good friend of mine do the photography and thinking of not having a reception due to lack of money.

Ten people, a great officiant, a beautiful lunch and you're done.

But I'd really look into the financial end of things. What you're saying doesn't add up.

    Congrats!

I would buy nice rings for each other and then go get married at the courthouse, and maybe have a small celebration at a resturant. Once you graduate and save up you can plan the weddings of your dreams. Just my opinionSmiley smile GL!

ETA: This is what I did 5 years ago, and we had a vow renewal after five years. BEST decision we ever made. We were both broke in college lol.

Hey. I will get married at the time of college. I think that it is early. But I love my future husband. Therefore, I will marry. If I won't have time to do my papers, I will call to dissertation writing company - https://papersbattle.com/best-dissertation-writing-services/ , which is included in the top 10 companies. Also, I want to say that this company is the best.

My partner and I managed to spend close to nothing on our wedding. It was a personal preference not to have a big ceremony while we were still at college. Maybe this could be something to consider for you. Also, you can celebrate your wedding a bit earlier. My friends had a legal ceremony and that was it, and then, a year later, they've decided they're finally ready to have a big celebration they could not afford earlier before their graduation. Look into this option.

My college makes it easy for students to get married for little to nothing. They rent their chapel to students for $40! And they have a banquet room that holds up to 80 persons that they rent for $600 (plus an extra student discount!) If you don't mind getting married on your college campus, you should definitely check out what they offer. You could also try getting a park for free, or if you know someone with a nice backyard, that could work too. Amazon and eBay have reasonable priced decor. You can DIY the invites (greetingsisland.com has some decent free editable templates that you can just download and print at home). Check around to see if you have friends or family who are skilled at stuff like photography, videography, cooking, baking, etc). It's possible to have the wedding for $3000. Just check around, you never know what you'll find 🙂

Many colleges have chapels which current or former students can use for very little. My first wedding was in a Non- denominational college chapel, and since school was not in session, after spring and before summer school, they had a wide variety of reception rooms. We had coffee and desserts, served in a reception room used for raising money, giving parties etc, quite nice, opening on to a formal garden. Only 80 people, and cheap, cheap. Very nice spaces I had not thought about.
