Color opinions!

Courtney, on October 8, 2021 at 4:52 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 7
Hi! I am getting married in a historic mansion next October (here is a recent wedding that happened there recently - it’s called the Mansions on Fifth: https://burghbrides.com/blog/dramatic-black-white-mansions-on-fifth-wedding/)

I want a dark/moody color scheme (but not creepy/Halloween-ish). I want to use black table cloths like shown in the photos), but decided on this after I already started thinking of/buying decor in my other colors. The other colors I am thinking of are burgundy, dark teal, and navy with greenery and accents of either gold or rose gold/copper (opinions on that, too, please!). I plan on using vintage books in those colors (burgundy, blue/navy, dark teal, and black) for my centerpieces with lots of candles, greenery, and potentially one of those geometric gold frame/lantern things (https://www.efavormart.com/products/2-pack-12-rectangular-gold-metal-wedding-flower-stand-geometric-centerpiece-vases?variant=31651280388142&gclid=CjwKCAjw2P-KBhByEiwADBYWCrTIXuJ10sr96GYTzOdPMgUZW6_0l2NX_-RIcssBtDdwd5RkGtQ_txoCvs0QAvD_BwE).
All of this being said, do you think black table cloths with burgundy/navy/dark teal black books, and lots of metallic gold or rose gold accents would look good, especially considering the venue and vintage theme? The only black would really be in the table cloths snd some of the vintage books. Everything else would be one of those other colors. I suppose some of the candle votives around the venue would be white/ivory. If this color combo sounds icky/too dark, what color combo would you recommend? I’d prefer to keep my black tablecloths because it’s not within my budget to pay for upgraded tablecloths.

I’m not a huge fan of dark table cloths and with your venue’s dark wall and then dark centerpieces I worry it would be too dark. You can always do white table cloths (if your venue offers them) with a dark runner or overlay. I bought my runners for less than $1! That’s just my personal preference. What your described sounds fine. And remember while decor is a big piece, no one will really remember (unless it’s a disaster and even them most probably won’t). If you think you’ll be happy with dark table cloths then that’s your decision. Don’t keep dwelling on it (I had to learn that the hard way) it will cause you unnecessary stress over something that’s minor at the end of the day.
(Or I just had another thought. If you love the black table cloths and can swing $1 per table you could always add a lighter runner to lighten it up too!)

I think burgundy or maybe a bit of gold will look good there. I assume you don't want the same as those pictures (they seem to have gone with just black, white, and greenery only).

I think your planned color palette and the black tablecloths could be lovely for a moody, romantic vibe , but contrast is key to pulling it off. You need to find some way to add pops of lighter/brighter colors so that the dark linens and dark decor in the dark room don’t all blend together and feel heavy. You could add more white/ivory candles or some small white/ivory floral pops in with the greenery for the centerpieces. What were you planning for place settings? Chargers, plates, napkins, menus, etc… are all great places to create contrast and help tie it all together

Thank you all for the great suggestions! Didn’t even think of the fact that it would all blend together! I am going to have white candles and some white flowers with the burgundy and navy mixed in, as well as lots of greenery. I plan on incorporating flowers and greenery into the centerpieces. The plates will be white and the chargers will be metallic gold or rose gold, if that helps!

Also will be adding in some menus that will be white/ivory with the pops of burgundy, teal, and navy.

That all sounds lovely!! I think I’d lean toward gold over rose gold accents, but with a good balance of the gold and white/ivory accents that you’ve mentioned, I definitely think you could pull off the darker decor with the black linens

I am relieved to hear that - most of the decor I bought is metallic gold, so glad I don’t have to do some serious spray painting! 😂
