Colorado Marriage License confusion!

91419bride, on May 3, 2019 at 11:21 AM Posted in Colorado Planning 0 6

Hi everyone! We are getting married in Colorado in September. The ceremony will be at the Red Rocks Trading Post. My mom had told me that we had to obtain our license in the same county as where our ceremony is. She claimed that Red Rocks Trading Post is in Jefferson County. But on the website, it mentions that Denver County manages Red Rocks. I'm not sure where my mom got this information, but she did not get married in Colorado.

So I emailed Denver County's marriages department asking which county we should be doing our marriage license through. They simply said "You can obtain your marriage license in any county you wish to. It just has to be recorded in the same county that issued it."

I'm so confused as to where we should be getting our marriage license! Both Jefferson county and Denver county are convenient for us. I guess we'd prefer Denver county, but only if that ends in us being legally married. Can anyone help clear this up for me?

I would go with whatever the county office is telling you so it sounds like as long as you return it to the same office you apply for it at, it can be from either.

I'm not sure what the confusion is. If their office told you that you could obtain your license in either county, then you can get it in either county.

I’m also not totally sure where the confusion lies. No offense to your mother, I’m sure she was well intentioned, but just disregard what she has said— she’s not an authority on this issue. Follow what the county clerk has said. So, doesn’t matter where you get it as long as it’s returned the same place. In this instance, Denver county seems like a no brained since 1: you say it is your preference and 2: You have confirmation from
them specifically that it is fine to do it there.

    • "Waiting Period: There is no waiting time for getting married in Colorado.
    • Colorado marriage license is valid for 35 days.
    • Witnesses: In Colorado witnesses are not required.
    • Who Issues Licenses: The County Clerk’s office is responsible for issuing marriage licenses in the State of Colorado.
    • Where to Apply: A marriage license may be obtained from any county in the State of Colorado (regardless of where you live or where you are getting married), and may be used to be married in any county in the State of Colorado."

You can get your marriage license in any county you wish in Colorado and be married anywhere in Colorado with that license. It just needs to be turned back in and completed in that same county you got it from. I did find however that their license validity is pretty short, so watch the dates..

Not true. You can get your marriage license in any CO county, get married in any CO county, and file the license at the original county you got the application from.

This was great as I just moved to Colorado and will be getting married here. Seems as though your license is only good for a month so not too much planning ahead on this one Smiley smile
