Completely non romantic reasons to get married ;-)

Samantha, on April 29, 2021 at 1:20 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 14
I just got the new pricing for my work health insurance, and realized that since I have both my girls and me on my policy, it won’t cost anything to add a spouse. I told FH and he said, “Oh. I pay around $600 a month.”
That’s quite a bit of money!
I’m torn. We could do the courthouse now and have the party later but I really want the wedding to be The Day. We have the venue for Oct 15, 2022. The deposit is only $250. This is not really a major issue, actually a good problem to have.

I hear you. My FH is currently uninsured and we also talked about getting legally married before our ceremony so he could be on my insurance. Decided not to but we heavily considered it.

Whoa that is a lot of money! Roughly 18 months between now and then, so north of $10k! Perhaps it might make sense to have a minimony within the next few months (is there a dating or engagement-versary coming up?) and then have a sequel wedding next October? Wow - now that I think about it, the cost savings alone could pay for a wedding! (I don't know what the COL is in your area, but 10k is nothing to sneeze at haha)

For what it's worth, I got married in a minimony (for a few practical reasons plus a few emotional reasons) in September 2019 and was planning a sequel wedding for May'20 (then Jun'21, and hopefully Sep'22).

We did that. We got legally married on 12/21/20 (moved from 9/19/20) and our (post-postponed) wedding is slated for 9/18/21. If I hadn't needed medical help, I doubt we would have gotten legally married that early - likely would have waited until this year.

Honestly, I think it totally makes sense to get legally married now to save so much money on healthcare costs. Just make sure you're up front with your guests about it being a celebration of marriage.

You're a smart woman. Do what your gut feels is the best for you both. Maybe you could even move the wedding up? There are many valid reasons to get married for practicality sake.

That is a huge savings! We were also surprised that combining our car insurance once married saved us money. (*Also switched companies at same time so that may also be a factor!).

We got legally married last year due to postponing from Covid and are doing our big wedding in 2 weeks with a ceremony and everything. Even if you decide to get married early and still have a wedding doesn't mean it won't be special and romantic! I feel like I would go for it. That is A LOT of money lol.

We’re still talking about it. He said just so you know, I promise not to marry or kill you for insurance!”
He mocks my Forensic Files obsession.

Hey! Just stumbled across this and I know I'm late to the party, but in case you haven't already resolved it - are you sure you can't get him on your insurance without being married? My FH was able to add me to his insurance this year as a "domestic partner" until we get legally married in November (we're in IL - I believe the regulations around this vary by state).

We both work for the local government which means......FREE INSURANCE!!!!!!!!!!!! We won't have to pay ANYTHING (except eye and dental) until we have kids, then it'll go up to about $500 a month, so not looking forward to that haha.
