Confused - Who keeps the Garter?

Ashlee, on June 4, 2014 at 2:37 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 34

I've heard two different things on the bouquet/garter toss. One- the guy who catches it is supose to keep it after putting it on the girl who caught the bouquet.

Two- the girl keeps the garter and the bouqet.

Soooo, who keeps the damn garter??? lol

I just imagine who would want to keep a piece of material that's probably all sweaty and nasty at that point.

It was my understanding the bride wears two garters... one to keep and one the husband pulls off and flings. I thought the guy who caught the garter kept it just like the girl who catches the bouquet keeps that... Maybe I'm misinformed, though!

Don't make people do that... that's what everyone expects at weddings and that's the MAIN reason why NO ONE participates in those anymore unless you bribe them.

Just toss the bouquet. Toss the garter. Then, leave it at that. Whoever catches them, keeps them.

    Nothing else after that.

I was only wondering bc i do have two garters but they are both sooooooooooooo gorgeous and i paid like 150 for them. I didnt think the girl was going to make the toss one so gorgeous so now i want to keep both of them LOL. I wouldnt mind going up to the guy after and just saying like can i have my garter back lol but it would be awkward with a girl bc maybe she wants to keep it i dont know. But that was my thought exactly who would actually keep it? they would prob end up throwing it out and after spending that much- noo way are they throwing it out i'd rather have it back! Then i was also thinking of buying a cheap toss one but wearing both the glam ones and when he takes off the toss garter id switch it out with the cheapy one and toss that one.

From reading the past posts on this topic, I think it's different in various parts of the country, but personally, I've never seen the guy put it on the girl who catches the bouquet. That would be really awkward... what if it was a young girl? Ick.

Are you really going to make the guy who catches it put it on the girl that catches the bouquet? So awkward for everyone involved and everyone watching.

I had never heard of putting the garter on the guy who catches it until WW. However, this weekend I was at a wedding where it seemed like that's what was going to happen, but they blindfolded the garter toss winner and switched out the bouquet toss winner for the groom's uncle. It was hilarious!

Luckily, in our case at my wedding, the girl that caught the bouquet, and the guy that caught the garter (which I didn't wear, DH pulled out of his pocket) were in a relationship with each other, so they were completely comfortable with the attention on them while he put the garter on her. All the guests got a kick out of it.

DH caught the garter at his bro's wedding (prior to our engagement) and had to put it on his bro's step-daughter. Super awkward. Just toss it and let the guy keep it at that point. And if you didnt want to toss the garter because it's "too pretty," why even bother wearing one at all? They're sweaty and uncomfortable.

Can you just toss the bouquet and not the garter? I don't think I am going to wear any garters and my florist insisted on having a toss bouquet. I'm confused.

I think the placing the garter on the girl should be decided upon who has caught it.

    No if:

someone under the age of 18

    someone in a relationship

especially if the other person is present

    there's a big age difference

    related

    Yes if:

the two people are okay with it

You just have to use good judgement and common sense.

I'm confused as to why you would spend so much on a garter? Yikes!

By a dollar store one to toss because yes, it will either A- be thrown away or B- sit in someone's junk drawer for three years and eventually thrown out.

Also, don't make you guests put anything on each other. It's weird and uncomfortable for 95% of your guests.

I had a cheap garter for tossing. I actually have no idea who kept it. We did the garter toss late in the evening. Everyone was drunk and we didn't have kids. The guy put it on the girl without any direction lol. I'm surprised so many people are against this.

I gave my bouquet to my grandmother. DJ helped with announcing the presentation (no toss). DH removed my garter and he kept it.

When I was looking for garters most places sold sets (one to toss, one to keep)

Yeah I am wearing a garter and letting FH take it off in the room. I think that would be awkward to toss a garter, have a random guy put it on a random girl, and then ask for it back. Ew

We're doing both a bouquet toss and a garter toss. We are not doing the awkward "Here, let me put this on your leg" part. Yuck!\

Also, $150 for a pair of garters is crazy, especially when you toss one that will eventually get thrown away. For the love of god, don't ask for it back. Why even toss it if you don't want anyone else to have it? Buy a cheaper one to toss, or don't throw the garter at all.
