Confusion with the apostrophe

Sheila, on June 28, 2019 at 7:43 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6
I made an order to personalize a wine box for our wedding and the last name of my FH is Giese. I read on google if the last name will be “The Gieses” or “ The Giese’s”. The article said Gieses will be for Plural like more than one Giese and the Giese’s will be possessive term. I ordered the box with The Gieses following this article and now I’m confused! Who knows about these rules? Please I need advice.
Thanks

    What you ordered is right.

I’m happy they had that explained in the personalization! I can’t tell you how many people don’t know how to use an apostrophe correctly. I’m not shaming anyone, but I am concerned that Mays it hasn’t been taught to a significant number of people.

For example, I have witnessed holiday cards being sold that said “Happy Holiday’s” when it should not have an apostrophe. The apostrophe is only when you are trying to express ownership/possession (I.e. “That is Kristen’s pencil”)

In your case I think you selected the appropriate one because I don’t know why anyone would want the possessive form on a personalized item. Smiley smile

What you ordered is correct. Last names are no different than any other English word...to make it plural, you add an S (sometimes ES...sometimes IES). I don't know where all this apostrophe nonsense started and why people think it makes a word plural.

It's silly, but think of it like this: If you have 1 cat and you get another cat, you now have cats. If you have one Giese and you add another Giese, you now have Gieses.

Yes, that's correct! An apostrophe would make it possessive.

You ordered the correct thing! You and are your FH will be "The Gieses." The apostrophe is used to express possession like "we're going to Mr. Giese's house" or "this is the Gieses' car."
