Corkage fee, etc.

Ashleymarie1027, on October 10, 2021 at 4:58 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 4

Hi everyone,

I just saw a post on FB from another bride that they were given a surprise bill for a corkage fee that wasn't in their contract. So I looked it up and saw that it basically means it's a charge from the venue or caterer for when the staff opens and serves the wine or other alcoholic drinks. So for my situation, we are having champagne on the guest tables for the toast and everything else is BYOB. Since we're not having the catering staff serve it, we won't be charged anything correct? I've never heard of this until now

I would definitely check with your venue and/or caterer ahead of time on this! Policies vary depending on the company.

Totally agree with Lisa- check with your venue to see what their policy is. If they say there is no corkage fee, get that in writing.

Corkage and cakeage fees are common here in restaurants where BYO is allowed, but I would expect them to be outlined in a wedding venue contract if they were going to be charged!

Even when the wine or cake is served by the participants, some places do charge you for them, as they still have to provide the glasses, plates or whatnot.

Check with your venue. Mine had all the fees written in the contract. Corkage fee is most often for bottles that were brought in from outside of the venue.
