Coronavirus and Wedding Insurance

Laura, on February 28, 2020 at 8:02 PM Posted in Planning 2 9
Our wedding is in 4 months. People will need to be booking flights and such. Everyone is traveling to Arkansas. Has anyone announced plans to guests in the event flights are cancelled? Or if suddenly next to no guests attend... Have you considered wedding insurance? How are we handling this??? Suggestions and ideas needed beyond dress delays.....

So my friend is wanting to do Asia for her honeymoon in sept and she’s skeptical also but I told her sept is far away at least where you do have a few months you can wait or if you really want buying travel protection doesn’t actually cost all that much if it makes you feel more reassured

Well are most of your guests local? It really all depends on you but honestly if you've already chosen a wedding date do you want to change it because of the virus outbreak? I would say if gas can't fly then that would be on them but at this point they are adults and they should take precautions of their travel plans because it is worldwide known that the virus is an issue.

I was concerned about planning for 100 guests and getting 20. Deposits and such aren't refundable. And banquet minimums must still be meet. Most of our deposits are coming due in the next 6 weeks. I'd hate to be out a ton of money if things get complicated. No one is local to our venues - even I'm traveling in... I live close enough to drive, but my hotel is close to a major airport where international travel is likely. So are the guests' hotels.

Unfortunately, I think this is so much uncharted territory, that it's going to be really hard to get reliable info. Others have posted that typical wedding insurance covers very restricted things -- if you or FH are ill, or possible "acts of God" (hurricanes, etc.). If you have wedding insurance, read that policy and maybe trying calling the provider for info. Cancellations aren't likely to be addressed in your venue or vendor contracts, because who would anticipate a pandemic??? You can call them and ask, but they may not know or be very flexible about interpreting policies that didn't take this into account. Hopefully we're all over reacting and things won't be nearly as bad as the hype. Good luck!

Check the conditions of wedding insurance before purchasing. I'm in a FB group for our honeymoon cruise. Several people have travel insurance and are realizing it won't cover coronavirus due to it being an epidemic.

Has anyone come across or know of any policies that are honoring or covering corona? Many have notes about covering illness, but I'm also seeing things like this (from the Progressive website):

I called all the major insurance companies. Even though they say they'll cover bride/groom illness, the illness must not be coronavirus.

You would’ve already had to have purchased wedding cancellation insurance before the pandemic was a known thing. We’re supposed to get married in May and we purchased a wedding cancellation policy in January. Read your contracts carefully! In our WEDSAFE (nationwide) contract, it only lists things that are NOT covered, and in this list, it mentions nothing close to a pandemic/virus. When I called wedsafe, they told me that our wedding being cancelled due to the coronavirus will not be covered. Thankfully, my fiancé is an attorney that sues insurance companies for a living. We are so angered by their blatant lie, that if you are in the same situation as us, or know someone who is, and you live in the state of Florida, my fiancé is willing to look at your contract for you. You can email it to ********@********.***
