First thing is to decide on a budget with your future spouse.

Figure out how much you're able to spend on your wedding, and put together a tentative guest list. From there, look at venues that can hold at least the number of guests you're planning to invite, and then once you have that booked, look for any other vendors you're planning to hire (photographer, DJ, etc). A great planning tool is the checklist on either Wedding Wire or The Knot - those will walk you through planning each month by giving a list of tasks that should be completed that month.
