Couples living or moving abroad?

mrsaj2b, on June 16, 2019 at 2:04 PM Posted in Married Life 1 8
Curious to hear from couples who have moved from the U.S. to go live abroad. Right now my FH are contemplating a move from the hustle and bustle life that is the DC area to an interim spot in the the U.S. less stressful where we will then decide where we ultimately want to settle down. We we are warm weather people so the Caribbean is tops on our list. Not sure we’d move completely from the U.S. anytime soon but right now we’d split our time with another by working remotely.

For the couples who have made a move...

What were your challenges?
How long did it take you to settle in?
Is this a temp or perm move?

TIA

    Hi there Smiley smile

Splitting your time living and working somewhere in the interim sounds like a wonderful idea to trial moving instead of making one giant leap. It's great that you both have the option to work remotely!

Where are you thinking of moving to in the interim?

I did the opposite from you, mrsaj2b, I moved to the US with my DH one year after my wedding. It basically meant for me that as soon as I was done with wedding planning I had to immediately start house hunting, planning, dealing with visas and immigration stuff, and packing. It was hard work! It was a permanent move and we're so glad we did it, but don't underestimate the amount of work it'll take. Moving is stressful, international moving is even more stressful!

How long after the wedding are you thinking about moving?

For the interim we are thinking Florida. We are so over the cold weather, snow, and ice that we get in the DMV and want to get some heat and mild winters into our lives on a regular basis. For our ultimate spot that is to be determined but places like Belize, Roatan, Panama, and the Caribbean islands are on the list. If I thought I could handle it, South Africa.

Where did you move from to come to the US?

That is the one thing I am not looking forward to is moving. You are right it is such a chore. I can't imagine an international move but ultimately if that is where we land then it is what it is. I have a dog too!

As to timing after the wedding, we have a three year plan but that is just a move from the DMV to another point in the US. Thereafter, we will probably hang in the new spot for a few years while we travel and explore places for our ultimate move. If we could start the process earlier we would but we have some family stuff that we need to monitor and see where things are heading. We are both the eldest child in our families and our families rely heavily on us for direction, etc.

OMG I also moved with my dog! I had stress dreams for a full year before we flew with him, but it turned out just fine, I was far more traumatized than my dog ever was by the flight, haha. We moved from the UK and it was a hassle but it al turned out great, just like I'm sure your move will Smiley heart

MY FH and I have been thinking about what our next move is too. We're currently in LA and hate how expensive the cost of living is on top of the atrocious traffic. We both make good money but it's not worth it to us anymore. We're also thinking overseas-Portugal and Italy but also considering the south Caribbean since they are out of the hurricane zone. Curacao specifically. Interested to hear other's experiences!

I totally agree with you about the money. Money just can't buy or begin to compete with the peace of mind and quality of life we now seek. We really just want to go simple at the end of the day.

LOL! I agree it is us humans that probably stress out more over our pets.
