Couples Shower Alcohol

MrsRies&Love, on November 21, 2017 at 12:11 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 21

My MOH asked me for advice on alcohol options for the couples shower that BP is throwing for us. They're doing a beer-themed shower and likely serving beer and wine.

The venue she booked has a few options. Have you been to a couples shower where alcohol was served? Was it open bar, cash bar, etc.? What would you suggest she do? Guest list is about 50 people.

1. Cash bar

2. Open bar - but the rate is $29 per person, which is $10 more per person than the food. I don't want the BP to have to pay this, it's absurd.

3. Open bar but pay per consumption (drinks range $4-6)

I understand cash bars are tacky at weddings, but what about at a shower?

We're leaning more toward option 3. The shower is 1:30-4:30 in the afternoon and some have to travel, so there shouldn't be much excess drinking.

What would you do if you were in her shoes? She said their budget is still a little flexible. Thanks everyone!

I've never been to a shower with alcohol but I'm not opposed. Usually the ones I go to are just women at someone's house for a light lunch and beverages on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. However since the theme is beer related and given the situation in general, I would suggest you definitely pay for drinks. I would lean towards consumption bar.

Definitely option 3-- like you said, it's during the day, so wont likely be a huge tab. Maybe a few hundred bucks (assuming it isn't a huge shower). guests shouldn't have to pay for food and drinks, especially when also showering you with gifts. if it is too much of a cost burden for your hosts, offer to fund that part.

I've never been to a shower (baby, bridal, or couples) where alcohol wasn't included.

Thanks for the advice! Both MOH and myself have only been to showers at homes and alcohol was never provided. But I assumed the overall consensus would be to provide the alcohol. Just needed some reassurance.

Agreed with consumption. most showers i have been to the bar is only open for max 2 hours and people do not tend to get rowdy, so i would assume 2 drinks a person which would be much more affordable than the 29$ pp, that is crazy for a shower.

@Brd2be right? I understand that being the case for a wedding, but $29 per person for a 3 hour shower is insane.

Every shower I've been to has only ever included a champagne punch or red/white wine in the pricing. Mine was this past weekend and only wine was included and my sister and mom did a consumption. We both have drinkers in our family and literally only 4 drinks were on the tab. I would go with option 3.

I've never been to a shower with alcohol. Sounds like a good idea though, haha. Option 3.

You don't invite people to anything and ask them to pay.

    I would do consumption.

I would do consumption. Mine was a brunch shower so my MOH included mimosas. I don't think people go overboard at showers like they would at a wedding so I think you should be safe with consumption.

I think the consumption bar would be the best choice. A shower is generally a short period of time, someone is going to have to drive home, and I can't really see people drinking 29 bucks worth of alcohol in the situation (though in NYC, that's a glass of wine and a half, lol)

Definitely consumption. It would be weird to be invited to an alcohol themed shower that was cash bar and I highly doubt every single person will drink 5-7 drinks over the course of your shower.

I've never been to a shower where alcohol wasn't provided (at no cost to me). Typical experiences have been brunches with mimosa/premised bloody marys or lunches with wine brought in.

At 4-6$/drink, I'd definitely go consumption-- everyone would have to consume over 4 drinks to make the open bar worthwhile!

Is there anyway you can provide bottles of wine for each table and just have beer at the bar? I also have a hard time picturing anyone drinking hard liquor at a shower. But a single glass of wine or a beer, I could totally see that. Providing a set amount of alcohol may be a better/ easier route (if possible).

I've never been to a shower with alcohol, but since people are travelling 3 would be the nicest option if you feel like it is necessary.

I would definitely do consumption. This way people will have an option to drink but you are also not paying for wasted alch.
