Court wedding vs. small ceremony

Paige, on August 27, 2020 at 9:00 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 9

Hi ladies!

So me and the fiance have decided to get married VERY last minute (September 20th.) He wants to do the courthouse wedding (which I am fine with if we have a big vow renewal next year,) but I am leaning towards having a small ceremony either at a park, lake or backyard. I want to be able to wear a wedding dress...thats my issue. If we opt for the courthouse would me wearing a wedding dress be too much? He does not dress up very much..his version of "dressing up" is nice blue jeans and a plaid button up. I feel i would look like a fool wearing a really nice dress and him in his version of dressing up.

Which would you all recommend? the courthouse or a small ceremony? if the courthouse what type of dress? and then what would we do to celebrate afterwards?

Any and all suggestions please!!

I work at a courthouse and I see people coming in with full wedding attire and others are wearing jeans and a t shirt. It’s completely up to you, it to answer your question no wearing a wedding dress isn’t too much ive seen it plenty of times.

As for which one you should do. Are you gonna be able to plan a small ceremony in less than a month away? September 20 is literally right around the corner!

I say wear your dress to the courthouse and get your honey to dress up! Get a photographer if only for 30-45 minutes too.

I see people on Google images wearing a full blown wedding dress and suit when I search "courthouse wedding." Dress as you please, but it would be nice to get your significant other to dress up as well.Court wedding vs. small ceremony 1

What state are you in? In some a courthouse wedding is you and no more than 2 people in a busy office with lots of people around. In others a number of people may go in a judges chambers. Some like mine they keep a Justice of the Peace on hand, who in some places has a small office or large room available, and in others will take you onto a larger lawn and garden area, for a fee and 15 minutes more. And once you have your licence, it is good in any city or town in the state.
Allowing you to choose which setting. Check.

I say you wear your dress! And make him dress up even if he doesn't want to lol you are getting married, you should make it special and get dolled up, whether it is at a courthouse or not.

Me personally, I would not wear a big ball gown or something with a long train but I think a simpler silhouette or something with a small train or no train could be very fitting and beautiful. I’ve also seen grooms/groomsmen dress up in jeans for a wedding day. Perhaps he could dress it up a little with a vest, a tie and nice shoes/boots and still be true to his style Smiley smile

I would recommend a small ceremony - you have more control over everything and it's more personal. However, I'm biased because I absolutely hate courthouse weddings - not knocking anyone who's done it though, just absolutely not for me. We eloped since our wedding was cancelled and it was super laid back, simple and enjoyable. But if you did decide to do the courthouse, you could wear whatever you want! As others said, some people go in an extravagant gown - do you! Smiley smile

North Carolina. I have looked in many counties around my area, and unfortunately they are all keeping it to no more than the 2 witnesses. That being said, we are trying to hurry and find a cheap/affordable venue last minute. Now that we have decided on that he will be wearing his dress blues (he is a retired marine) so that part is taken care of lol.

Thank you ladies for all of the advice! We are going to try and find a cheap/affordable last minute venue. The courthouses in our area are only allowing the 2 witnesses. We were set on having both sets of parents being there so that answered my question as to which one to do.
