Covering hay bales

We are using hay bales at the wedding as seating for our guest. Thing is I am not sure how I want to cover them or if I even want to. Any ideas on a budget friendly way to cover hay bales??

I can't believe you were even considering not covering them, have you ever sat on a hay bale? omg Ouch!

In order to make these even remotely comfortable maybe cover them with those lawn chair pads, the long lounger ones. Then there is still the issue of no back support as others have mentioned. Hopefully you aren't planning to have too long of a ceremony but please also consider having some chairs for those with bad back and knees and also those with allergies.

Lol yes the cost is another issue right now. Hay is extremely expensive right now due to all of the crazy weather. I am guessing no farmer is going to take a chance of his good hay getting ruined for a wedding. If you have to buy it what are you going to do with it after?

I would prefer a horse. Can you get me a horse to sit on?

Is this a new thing? The mason jar of 2015?

I don't mind hay bales. I understand the allergy concern, otherwise they aren't that bad.

I went to a wedding in September that had hay bales for the ceremony. They were covered in burlap that draped over the sides, and a small woven blanket that just covered the top. They weren't itchy or uncomfortable at all.

I just want to commend you for saying hay BALES instead of hay BAILS, which always makes me cringe. Also I'm on team chairs. Or team blankets on the ground. Sorry :/

I had to sit on hay bales for a wedding. Well, I was supposed to. I didn't know that was the seating, so I hadn't taken an allergy pill. I was there for about 5 minutes of the ceremony and had to leave. Was unable to make the reception as well, and I wasn't the only one. Please reconsider.

Free seating is good (you said this was from your grandpa's field at no cost, yeah?) ONLY if it serves the purpose of being comfortable and not injury-causing as well. In this case, the ground is free and would be a better option on both counts.

Etiquette-wise, where would you suggest that allergy-prone guests take an allergy pill before attending? Is that before or after they choose their dinner option?

Hay bales are very cute, but as others have pointed out, not comfortable for sitting. Have you ever sat on a hay bale? Gone on a hay ride? The last time I went on a hayride my legs felt poked and itchy through my jeans. So cover them in something stronger and thicker than denim. I'm guessing shearling blankets would be too pricey?

Benches would look just as lovely in pictures, and folding chairs are very affordable to rent.

Sorry just got back home YES I have played in straw and hay I rode hunter jumper for 16years and then barrels for 5yrs so been around horses my whole life. I would never go for straw but hay yes. Reason I ask is the venue I have there is a gentlemen that you can rent hay bales from 200 for $100 a day. I think it is coastal which I have actually slept in before itchy but honestly not uncomfortable. I was NOT planning on anyone sitting on the hay bales alone but using a nice bit of burlap covered by a colorful blanket maybe even a horse blanket so long as we got enough clean ones. I had also seen an idea for places boards over the hay bales so that you still seem them but it is more stable. The wedding is very casual NICE jeans is what we have listed on the STD's. I can actually get chairs for free they have them at the venue an my parents church which is 5min down the road has offered but I liked the look of the hay bales and it fits me!

Having read all this I am not sure now I worry about the allergies and I do worry about older guest going to talk to my coordinator tonight and get her opinion on maybe at least having some of the seating chairs....maybe mixing it up somehow.

My cousin did this for her wedding. She had her wedding on my moms farm. The neighbor let us borrow 75 bales. I found it to be a nightmare. I didnt personally sit on them since I was a BM. FH, my step dad and our neighbor moved all 75 bales themselves. Fh had to move them after the ceremony as well and he was a gm. He hated it. We covered the bales with nice sheets from thrift store. The sheets blew around and I am sure the guest were not comfortable. If chairs are free go for those!

Go with chairs! Allergies are the worst! I'd get a bad sinus migraine if I was around that much hay! I'd also worry that people with asthma could have an attack.

Save yourself the trouble and rent chairs or benches. Benches would look really cute! If you want a rustic look you could always cover the chair backs with burlap.

My wedding is very rustic so of course hay bales has came up tons of times and I keep declining because 1. Allergies (I'll be sneezing through my ceremony) and 2. I don't wanna hurt anyone's booty :/ could you rent chairs? And just decorate rustic?

Even if I'm wearing nice jeans, I'm STILL not sitting on your hay bales.

I know it's been said to death but I would literally be fuming if I had to sit on hay even in jeans no matter how covered it was. It's just so dang itchy and uncomfortable and there's no way I'd be able to pay attention to your beautiful ceremony when I'm fighting back complaining about how awful the seats are. I mean, I'd never say it to your face, as a guest I'd smile and congratulate yall and do my part but the second I was in the car with FH I'd be whining the whole way home lol I have a bit of a personal grudge against hay but that's a story for another day. All that bein said though, it's your day and you know your guests. If you think they'll be ok with it and won't resent you for it or have allergic reactions then go for it.
