Covid-19 Are vendors legally able to keep deposits with state of emergency?

Raelyn, on March 17, 2020 at 5:18 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 4
I live in Washington State, and we will be having our wedding in Arkansas on March 28th. Most of my family are coming from out of state, California, Texas and Hawaii. Since we live in a hot spot we are unsure of what will happen next. We have decided to cancel the wedding due to the unknown of this virus and how long it will last. Does anyone know if vendors contracts are basically null and void due to this being a state of emergency and CDC and the President have recommended no more than 10 people gathered? Or do they still have the legal right to keep the deposit?

It's a recommendation to not have gatherings over 10 people, not a requirement. Unfortunately, I don't think that a recommendation will have any bearing on your contracts.

If they cancel, I’m sure you’d get your money back...if you cancel, probably your loss...

I think this also depends on how willing they are to work with you - for instance in this covid 19 Dilemma are they even willing to reschedule and try to work with you, etc

They might be able to keep your deposit. Get ahold of all of your vendors and ask. I had to postpone my wedding and all of my vendors have been very flexible and understanding. We haven’t lost any deposits. Hopefully you will find the same!
