Covid bride Refunds?

Dj Tanner, on February 15, 2021 at 10:28 AM Posted in Planning 0 9
My wedding venue is making an awful lot of promises to me and I’m worried about them being able to keep those promises. We’ve been trying to jump through hoops with our state to have the wedding that we want, and our venue is charging us accordingly to what we are requesting.
My second deposit is due March. I’m thinking about telling them that I’m not going to pay them the second deposit until it gets a little bit closer to the wedding because if for whatever reason nothing that I want to happen can happen, I certainly don’t want to lose additional thousands on top of what I may already lose.
I’m just nervous that 10 days before my wedding my venue was going to come at me and say that we can’t have XYZ and they’re not refund me accordingly.Has anyone else experienced this where you’ve paid in full and then were told days before the wedding that you can’t have XYZ? Did they refund you at all, or adjust the price for administrative fees?I’m about 14 weeks out and I’m starting to stress hard because everything just always seems so up in the air by the minute.

If they are promising that you'll be able to have specific things at your wedding that may be impacted by local restrictions, I would ask them to put it in a contract or in a written agreement that if you can't have XYZ at your wedding due to COVID restrictions in your area, that they will refund you 100% or allow you to postpone with no penalty. I know my venue will not refund me at all, but they will allow us to postpone if restrictions impact the wedding that we planned for.

Yes, I mean it’s even coming down to little things too like a pasta dish that we want served. They roll the Parmesan wheel to each table and let the middle on fire and then cook the pasta in there. The taste is amazing! But we’re also mostly getting this just for the presentation. If they tell me 10 days before my wedding that we can no longer have this the way we want it served, then there’s no point of having it at all and we wouldn’t want to serve our guests the pasta before the entrée if they’re simply just going to bring it out plated without watching the Parmesan wheel on fire. It just defeats the whole purpose in my opinion. Covid bride Refunds? 1

I agree with Lisa, I would see if they would add a clause in your contract that very clearly states your concerns with Covid restrictions. I would definitely hesitate to tell them you will not make your second deposit however, because not doing so may void your contract with them and result in you no longer having a venue and also you forfeiting the deposit you’ve already placed.

That sounds super unique! Very cool! Yeah, I would definitely ask them to put together a written agreement that says you'll be refunded, at minimum, the full cost you paid for the pasta option (or any other things that you paid for that wouldn't be able to be served/hosted the way it was originally intended). Tell them your concerns, and that you would feel more at ease if you had a written guarantee that you won't be responsible for those costs if you cannot have those things due to restrictions. I also agree with Ava - I wouldn't state that you are hesitant to pay your next payment. They may look at it as the money being held over their heads, and they might not respond well to it.

Wow good point! It just sucks to me that it’s so one-sided. My venue has already broken their contract by charging me for things giving me proposals and planning for things that might not happen. I definitely need to reach out to a lawyer at this point

Very true! Thank you for this insight! Because I really didn’t think of it that way that they might view that as me breaking the contract which would give them free reign to do whatever they please, even though they’re already kind of doing that, but it may give them an opportunity to do it even more.

Unfortunately I had to cancel a wedding three days before it was supposed to happen because of Delaware restrictions fortunately I was able to refund them 100% of their money and the venue did as well it’s unconscionable that a vendor would take money and not give it back if your wedding can’t take place because of Covid
