Covid Planning - August 2021 Date

Jessi, on May 3, 2021 at 10:40 AM Posted in Planning 0 7
So... I can hardly believe that I'm posting this. When we set our date a year ago, my fiancé and I thought Covid would be long behind us... Unfortunately our venue is still only allowing 65 currently & we have 140 guests on our list. We are trying to be optimistic that by August 28th our venue (which has a 300 person capacity) can accommodate our number. But if not, what should our cut off be for Plan B? My fiancé and I have been together almost 10 years so we are really not wanting to compromise on having all of our loved ones at our special day.

Note: The city health guidelines say social gatherings can be held at 50% capacity, meaning we shouldn't have an issue... but when I tried calling the health department no one knows and I don't want to fight with my venue over it, but what they told me that's where they are getting their information and so I don't know who to believe 😔🤦🏼‍♀️

I'd plan according to the current guidelines, and then expand when/if it becomes possible.

As someone who works in local government, there are horrible communication issues between businesses and health departments about local restrictions and state restrictions. Sadly, I would not be suprised if your venue has been given the wrong info from the health department. 1

I would advise you either pin down someone at the health department and get them to clarify what they are advising your venue and why (which will be difficult) or plan for the number of guests currently allowed at your venue. The other options involve changing your date or venue location...

I just had my wedding (May 15) and while Covid was a consideration, I think we have hit a turning point. I lucked out that the cdc changed their guidance and vaccines have become prevalent. With these changes, you likely will be ok. If you wait another week or so, we should see some more guidance opening up. I know no one wants to wait to send out invites, but it is the safest thing to do. The other option would be to send out the first 65 and then follow up with the rest. No one can predict the future, but being optimistic here isn’t a bad thing (especially if it seems the venue is being stricter than the current guidelines).

The pandemic is over, based on public health metrics. Plan the wedding you want.

I think a lot of this will depend on the part of the country you're in, but by August I would hope that even the strictest states/regions will have relaxed their protocols as vaccines become more widely available. With the CDC relaxing their mask guidance last week, we will likely either see cases increase or maintain SQ/cases go down. In Texas, we've been "maskless"/voluntary mask for several months already and have continued to see a downward trend in cases. It may seem foolish, but I would opt not to develop a plan B. It sounds like you don't want to cut the list, so your options would either hope things are "normal" or reschedule if the restricted counts are still in effect.

I would be really surprised if things remain this restrictive in August. Some of the states that have very the most restrictive throughout the pandemic, such as Vermont and California, are opening up restrictions considerably by early summer. August should actually be a low-time for infections, with many vaccinated, people primarily gathering outside, and no clustering in schools.

The pandemic is NOT over; 40% of Americans are vaccine hesitant and no vaccine is yet approved for children under 12, but metrics are trending favorably just about everywhere in the United States.

You don't say where you are located, but it might just take some time for your venue to catch on to the constantly changing public health recommendations. I wouldn't stress just yet. I do think you can reasonably plan for your 140 guests. If your venue still hasn't updated their guidance within another month (2 months before your wedding, when invites typically go out), I'd pressure them further to get with the program.
