How strongly do you feel about your fiancé(e)'s finances? Is significant credit card debt a relationship deal breaker for you? Or something you're happy to help them work through?

Both of us have cc debt and it's not a huge deal. I'm not really even sure how much DH has if I'm being honest!
We're both actively working to pay off our debts though, which I think is what matters the most!

Before planning anything when we first got engaged almost 3.5years ago, we worked on paying off any dept from CC, student loans, our cars, ect. Neither of us wanted to start a marriage with dept. We know that money is the the number one stresser. For me, it would only be a red flag/deal breaker if he was so in dept and refused to work to get himself out.

I have student loan debt, and I'm pretty sure everyone has some sort of debt. Definitely not an issue and something we can work through together.

It's not a huge deal. My FH doesn't have debt right now, but I have my student loans that I am working on paying off.

Not a big deal for us. Almost everyone our age has some kind of debt.

Red flag. I knew FH had a lot of debt coming into the relationship from going back to school later in life but he's working hard to pay it off.

Both of us had debt going into our relationship, mine being my grad school debt and his credit card/school debt. Because of this, we kind of got on this "debt free journey" together and I believe it brought us closer, being that we both had this goal to achieve together. While we are still on this rollercoaster toward financial freedom, hopefully we will be debt free soon!

We both have debt, but we are working together to get it paid off. So, neither really. Most people these days have some sort of debt.

I would say just red flag. We both have student loan debt (I have the most of it). FH has gotten better with his finances and money handling since we started dating but neither of us has ever had credit card debt.

It'd depend on what the debt was spent on. Fiance had an emergency and had credit card debt before we were engaged. He worked real hard at paying it off. If it was something silly like clothes it'd be a deal breaker.

I don't think it'ssome debt is a deal breaker but if it was tens of thousands of dollars or something insane then it might be. I want to buy a home in 2-3 years max.

Not a deal breaker if we could pay it off within a year or two, significant debt is another matter.

Neither, we both have CC debt but it’s not out of control, we have the funds to pay it off at once if needed but we choose to keep that as a security blanket. Life happens, as long as it’s being controlled I’m ok with it.

Neither, I have some and I would never expect my FH to pay it for me

He has more debt than me and a low credit score. I put him on one of my credit cards a few months ago, he doesn't use it though, just me, but i've made payment from his bank account and it's raised his score by 74 points. He is better off now that he no longer pays child support

Depends. Red Flag or even Deal Breaker if the debt is still being incurred at a high rate. Neither if it's older debt that is being paid off.

So I have a massive amount of student loan debt. FH had a pretty massive amount (to me) of CC debt. We worked on the CC debt and got it under control. FH also has pretty bad ADHD and spending and CC debt can be an issue for him so we have come up with plans to help control this. I get to hold onto all the credit cards and we have pretty frequent check-in's with our financial advisor and we only talk to him together. We both have amazing credit scores, so the debt isn't that big of an issue
