We both have some debt now so it's really not a huge deal for me.

I think it depends on the situation and how much, massive credit card debt would definitely be a deal breaker unless he had a plan and was working on paying it off.

Credit card debt would be a deal breaker. To me, it shows a lack of ability to budget properly and live within one's means. Student loan debt, like a mortgage, is not a deal breaker. It is an investment in your future earning potential and family.

CC debt could be a deal breaker - depends on the extent and how much they have thought out their plan to pay it off. A little here and there can be excusable. so 80% a dealbreaker. Wouldn't run away screaming, but also a red flag for future financial stability.

Red flag, but not a deal breaker. I feel like almost everyone has debt at our age!

As long as the two parties are honest and open about debt, I don't see this as being deal breaker material

A lot of credit card debt would be a deal breaker for me. And yes, credit card debt is different from student loan debt.

Deal breaker if it's beyond excessive and isn't doing anything to get it paid off.

Red Flag if working on it. . . Gotta make sure it doesn't happen again

Definitely a red flag if it was excessive debt, but I have a mortgage and he has a car loan. We both are paying for those at a good rate!

Red flag. We both need to be honest on what debt we have in general and why. I'd also need to know the plan to alleviate it. For instance, if I wasn't in public service, my student loans would criple us. But with them disappearing in 7 years, that was just a red flag I needed to be transparent about.

Well, we are the opposite. We buy alot of things with cash. So we need to stop that and build our credit.
We were raised in an era when credit cards were for emergencies only. If you didn't have the money, back then, you did without. It's a hard mentality to get over.
So cc debt would not be a deal breaker, unless he couldn't make payments on that debt.

Well, I'm the one with credit card debt, so whooops.

I guess it depends on how much and why you have it. I was underemployed/unemployed through most of the recession, so that's why I have a lot of debt.

If he wasn't paying his cc debt then yeah red flag. But he pays his bills so it's whatever.

Neither one of us had a credit card going into the relationship. So, when we got one we went a bit crazy, but we both were willing to help the other figure finances out. So, while it might be a red flag if this had continued or anything.

As long as he is trying to get them paid off and not just letting it get worse, it should be okay and I'm willing to help with paying it off as well.

I think if someone is upfront about it, and is working toward clearing their debt, then it is not a dealbreaker. As someone who has both student and credit card debt, I did what I needed at the time to get by, but am working hard to pay it off. My fiancé knows my situation, and that I do not expect him to take care of it. However, if someone is not willing to be open their debt and is reckless with their finances, then that would be a big red flag.
