It is understood that when you marry a person, you take on their debt as well. I would be a good Idea to either get counseling on the issue or help them as much as you can prior to getting married to eliminate or at least decrease the debt amount. Thank goodness I legally repair credit, so it's not an issue for us.

Red flag. Get control of the finances. Get on the same page and make a plan to get ahead and stay ahead. You don’t want to start a marriage on that

As long as it's a reasonable amount it's just a red flag that we can work through.

It's only a red flag/deal breaker for me if it's excessive and he isn't doing anything to pay it off. Also, if it's due to school, car loans, of life stuff, I understand. But if it's because of shopping sprees and unnecessary things, bye bye.

Red flag. I would insist it was cleared before I'd marry him.

Again, this is not an issue for my guy. He had credit in the past, he doesn't anymore, and won't go down that road again.

Under 30% on a credit card is normal as long as all payments are made and current. Being responsible with debt is one thing. Otherwise, it can be a HUGE red flag.

I don’t know about deal breaker but definitely red flag. My FH has a lot of medical debt but that’s a different story.

Red flag. I have never been in debt or had credit in my life, and I'm 34. The only time I might have to change that is for property purchase.
But he has done the whole debt experience, worked hard to pay it off and has said that he will never go there again. That was years before we even met.

I don't have any credits, so it would be a red flag... I wouldn't like to assume his debts as a couple.
