Crinoline and lace up/corset style dress question!

countrybride*H*, on August 11, 2011 at 4:07 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 18

I know for the brides who get bustles for their dress they say that you need to have someone go with you to the bridal salon to learn how to properly do your bustle. So my question is for those of you with a lace up/corset back dress, and yes I realize that lacing up the back of a dress isn't rocket science by any means, but did you show your mom, MOH, BM how you want it done?

My crinoline question- The one I have now just isn't giving me the amount of poof that I want. I have an a-line crinoline. I've been looking on ebay, and I'm wondering if just getting a fuller crinoline or going for a hoop skirt will give me the amount of poof that I want. Any ideas/suggestions?

I highly recommend you get someone to go with you to learn the lacing - it sounds ridiculous because it's just lacing but I had to get into my gown a certain way and shimmy it down as it was getting laced so it would lay right.

I would try the fuller slip - I think the hoop would be too much for this dress - also they are very difficut to walk and sit in.

I was wondering what sort of undergarments do you need to wear with a corset gown? If any? Dumb question perhaps. Does anyone have an answer...this seems like a good a place as any to post this question. BTW, love that dress Chelsea...I tried it on a DB and it was my fav. Though I went to another place and got something diffrent. Awesome choice!

I would get a very full skirt for under it, I dont think a hoop skirt would look great under that dress ... which is very beautiful by the way

Agree with Artisticveil, I think the hoop would give it to rounded a shape. You could do a smaller hoop with a crinoline on top, I've seen that done before.

@ Aquilla really I could get away without wearing a longline bra, and I had already bought one before getting my dress, so since I have it I'm gonna wear it lol, so I wouldn't have to wear the ones the store I had. As far as a crinoline/slip it really depends on the dress. With my dress I need a crinoline/slip or else mine looks weird even though there is plently of layers underneath. Some dresses have enough layers that you don't need a crinoline/slip. And its also all in what you want, if you want the poof factor or you want minimal poof.

I would definitely have someone go with you to learn how to lace the dress. Yes, it really does sound silly. But I was just in my cousin's wedding and our BM dresses laced up the back. Holy crap.......the time it took trying to figure out exactly how to do it and actually have it look presentable was really quite comical! In theory, it's an easy thing to do. In reality, it needs to be done a certain way to look good.

When I got my crinoline, the lady said if you keep pressing it, you can get it fuller. She mentioned that a sales lady at that same place was getting married, and her poof was HUGE using the same crinoline I got. I'm not sure exactly how, but ask the place where you got your crinoline and/or dress.

Thanks ladies for your feedback on the lace up question.. I thought it was kinda dumb, but I got my dress out today after realizing I didn't get the strings all the up in the bag like I meant too, and I laced it all the way up and while lacing it up I got to thinking about this. Here is a hoop skirt I just came across on ebay and it still has the 'aline' shape to it. And this would be my option for just a fuller crinoline I found as well.. first link is to the hoop skirt, and second link is to the fuller skirt

I have an aline dress too and i went with the hoop skirt. My hoop likes like the first picture you posted. I tried my dress on with about 5 different crillions but the hoop was the only thing that gave it the right about of poof. And another positive was that the hoop made it soo much easier to walk. The hoop i bought actually lets you adjust the size of the hoop so after pictures if you dont want to take it off you can make it smaller

Your welcome Aquilla! How many hoops does your hoop skirt have Jessica? I've seen some with 6 hoops, but it looks to poofy for my dress.

@ Chelsea...The second skirt is too full for your dress. It will make the top of the skirt bunch up at the "waist" it is for a ballgown. I would go with the smaller hoop skirt. Plus the "bigger" the skirt, the shorter the dress. (If you were by a AA i would recommed getting the 110 slip. Its a crinoline slip between the one you have and the one in the picture).

Also you may try "fluffing" your skirt if it hasn't been done. Its super easy. All you need to do is have a friend stand with your skirt on and pull the crinoline apart like an accordian (<--/\-->). It will pull the wrinkles out and make the skirt fuller.

I would definately have someone come learn how to lace up your gown. You would be surprised how many people don't know how to do it. There is getting the laces to lay right, and pulling the dress so that it fits properly (and the bride can breathe)

My dress actually could stand a couple inches off of it honestly. When I got my dress hemmed, I was planning on wearing 4 inch heels, and now I am wearing cowboy boots. Or does anything think it would be cheaper to have my seamstress add a couple extra layers of tulle to my skirt now vs. buying a whole new one? I'm using a local seamstress not DB (my dress is a DB)

It may be, but you may have to purchase the crinoline for her. Our seamstresses would do it, but it cost almost as much as our bigger petticoats. I would talk to her about it, she will know how much further your dress can "poof" without being stressed and looking out of shape. Plus she can put the "poof" where you need it (at the bottom) and avoid it being at the waist. In your picture it looks like it could use some fullness at the bottom, but not at the top 6 inches or so. HTH

OMG that was my very close 2nd dress...LOVE it! Actually once in a while I wonder if this is really my dream dress instead of the one i did get. Like you, i also wanted a more poofy dress, so that is one reason i decided against this one. I personally don't think this dress should be more full- it looks AMAZING as is!
