Cupcakes as centerpieces - ok to do??

Amy, on April 29, 2013 at 10:52 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 15

We are having approximately 300 guests at our reception. With round tables seating only 8 people each, we are going to have to do centerpieces for 38 tables. I'm trying to figure out a way to not spend a fortune. My current thought is to buy vases from the dollar store, put an LED light in the bottom, fill the vase with yellow water beads (our colors are yellow and gray), and put a plate of cupcakes on top of the vase. The cupcakes would serve as both the centerpiece and cake as we are only going to do a small cake for us to cut. Opinions? Does this seem ok to do?

Sounds delicious!! I would suggest a variety of flavors on each table though.

I really wanted to use cupcakes for centerpieces! However, I am having an outdoor tented reception and do not feel that they would hold up well. There are lots of ways to do it! And most can be done DIY style.

I think it would be a great idea! I would try a mock up to see how it would turn out.

I don't think your cupcakes will last long enough... based on personal experience.

Your guests will eat them before it's time.

I have a good friend who was married several years ago. She loves flowers, but she is passionate about the decorated cakes she makes for every and any occasion (she's really great and should start a small business).

Her centerpieces were not floral; they were all different, coordinating, decorated cakes. They were all beautiful, and the immediate impression was that this was a unique, charming, and successful idea.

I thought it was gorgeous -- and that's coming from someone who makes their living from doing lots of wedding bouquets and centerpieces, lol. As long as you have a focal point in the middle of your tables, it will be what it is: a centerpiece. I say, go with it.

Someone (was it Linda?) did cake centerpieces - she had a cake stand a cake she baked at each table, and they went around and cut the cake at each table to greet everyone. I loved this idea, so yeah, I think you can do cupcakes right on the table. cute idea.

I think people will eat the cupcakes before they are supposed to.. That and putting them on a vase you have to be careful it doesn't get knocked over by someone bumping the table or grabbing off the plate making it not be balanced.. I would say glue it but then you hve to turn the light on way before.

You could do a simple centerpiece with just daisys in it.. You can get a dollar store vase and put just a bouquet of daisy (5-7&dollarSmiley winking at schnucks. And then put candles around it. You're talking less than ten$ a table if you find cheap candles.

Or you could leave directions at the table as for what the cupcakes are for and hope for the best.

I would say if you do cupcakes, then after the cupcakes are gown, then have the caterer bring out new plates of something else, such as chocolate covered strawberries, you don't want the table to look bare. also I am big on cake presentation and a lot of guests are, I ordered lanterns online for 7.00 a lantern and sprinkeling petals around it, tops 8.00 a centerpiece.

Hi Amy! I love this idea! I originally planned to do something similar. Everyone I shared the idea with seems to think it was super creative too! I also thought about doing different cupcakes on each table to encourage the guests to mingle around the tables to find what they liked/meet new people along the way!

I would def do a variety of flavors and colors to give it a really pretty look Smiley smile Maybe sprinkle petals around it to finish it up. People will for sure eat them up before they should...but hey atleast they should enjoy them.

Get a variety of cupcake holders, i.e, footed bowls, cake plate on pedestal, wire cupcake holder and on the cupcakes add glitter, a flower and sprinkle the table with petals and small votives. should look nice. here's some photos.
