Cupcakes or wedding cake?

Nay, on April 4, 2022 at 2:57 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 6 34
Okay, i am making my own wedding cake, and im starting to think cupcakes and a small cutting cake are better, but i feel they will be more work.
This is a backyard wedding so i definitely think its more practical and i love that i can do multiple flavors, and there is less chance for things to go wrong vs stacking a 3 tier wedding cake. And i would need 100 cupcakes so THE WORK lol Anyone do cupcakes? Any suggestions?
Flavors im thinking of are banana pudding, strawberry shortcake, lemon drop, and salted caramel

I don't know much about making your own cake to that extent, but both of them seem daunting. So good luck with whichever choice you make!

Another option is you could make a small cutting cake for you and your partner and then a sheet cake to serve for your guests, which would be a lot less work but fewer flavor options!

Cupcakes do seem like the safer choice because same I do struggle making stacked cakes more than I do cupcakes. I agree with the ladies above though I would just purchase at Costco or another store with good prices. The banana pudding flavored ones you mentioned sound bomb tho😋

It wouldn't *have* to be Costco though - you could go to almost any grocery store and get a sheet cake or cupcakes (and a cutting cake) and a lot of stores have fun flavors. I agree with CountryBride - I wouldn't want to be trying to make my own cake - there's a lot going on in the lead up to the wedding, and there's no point in adding extra stress.

    I bake as a hobby.

The thought of frosting 100 cupcakes, moving them, and keeping them from melting and unexposed for an outdoor wedding sounds like a logistical nightmare. I'd only do the 3 tier cake if you've made one before and you know how to give it the proper supports.
I think you're much better off ordering bulk cupcakes or sheetcake and making a small cutting cake if you have your heart set on baking

I am not opposed to hitting a grocery store, i have only looked at walmart so far and i only saw the typical flavors. But i will check around. I know its alot of work making the cake/cupcakes, but my budget being 100 dollars, i have to do what i have to do 🤷‍♀️ i was even thinking about buying the cupcakes and just adding the filling and a homemade icing

The idea of making your own cake or cupcakes is lovely but can be really stressful. 100 cupcakes is a lot of work I d see if you can get some help or pick some up from a store. Costco sheet cakes are delicious so that's always an option never had their cupcakes but my guess is they are tasty too! My recommendation would be to only have your cutting cake on display and the sheet cakes in the back and brought out sliced after you and your partner cut the small cake. Good luck to you!

Both tiered cake and cupcakes are labor intensive. But tiered cake is easier to transport without getting damaged. Tiered cake is easier for guests to eat without the mess that comes with cupcakes where you wear the crumbs in your lap and frosting on your face if there are no forks and plates, which is overlooked when people serve or suggest cupcakes. Are you sure that you want to spend the time baking and decorating the day of/before the wedding? Even professional bakers leave the labor to other people they trust. To make it easy on yourself, because you will have other responsibilities and things that need to get done at the same time, consider a cascading cake or just a buffet of cakes. A cascading style is regular single tier 2-3 layers of cake and filling that are placed on different heights of stands.

On the flip side, I don’t understand why if you go the sheet cake route that it has to be hidden in the kitchen to be cut and plated. We attended a couple different weddings where the couples had 1/2 sheet cakes in a variety of flavors that were in placed front of guests the entire time and they were cut to order as guests requested them. There was plenty that they could have a slice of each in addition to a second serving if they wanted. Guests said it was the best most efficient cake presentation they had seen. There was no separate display cake for cutting. It was polished off before the end of the night but they made sure the bride and groom at each wedding had plenty to take to the hotel to snack on.

Yes, having to do it the day before the wedding is what will SUCK, good thing about the backyard is i dont have to transport them too far, and i just feel like the cupcakes is better because theres no professional cake cutter/server. So i like the idea of a grab and go. I am thinking i may just have to do grocery store cupcakes and then a special small cake just for us

You don’t need a professional cake cutter/server. Ask older ladies in your families and social circles if anyone is interested in cutting cakes because they typically have that knowledge and experience from events they have attended in their earlier years.

I am having a tea party type reception in my backyard. I think that that your idea is beautiful!
I've been to so many weddings, and believe me, I'd rather have a delicious cupcake. There are no wrong answers!

We are doing a 9” cake & 24 cupcakes from Publix. Idk yet how it will go. Our wedding is this Saturday, so I guess I’ll find out! (We have 52 guests & a 9” cake feeds about 30 according to the internet).

I think that making your own cake will be great. A lot of work though. We did our engagements cake. We made 5 cakes in different flavours and a stem and made it in to the shape of a flower and it was good. It was a bit hectic but it was great doing it as well. I think you should do it and have a go. Maybe you should have a practice first and see how it goes and how the flavours work and how long it would take to make and everything so you have an idea before you make it for the wedding. Smiley smile

A different option is that if you have any friends or family that live locally and like to bake you could split the work (and flavors). There's a Pittsburgh tradition called a cookie table where family and friends bring in hundreds to thousands of cookies, and that could be a way to make it less daunting. You could have each person helping you do two dozen each so it's not as daunting.
