Curious about something….relationship contracts

Diane, on December 7, 2023 at 8:48 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 7

Long time lurker….interested in others opinions and experiences. A friend told me that she heard of young people that are dating implementing “relationship contracts “. Such as, you will do this or that and with it consequences.

I have to admit that I was baffled. These people she knew were teenagers or college age but I wondered out of curiosity if this is something recent or new? Just curious

Sheldon did it in the Big Bang Theory, but I haven’t heard of it in real life!

If this is a case of life imitating art it’s unfortunate. Dating is meant to be a time for judgment and screening out people who are not compatible or have with objectionable behavior or beliefs. A contract defeats the purpose. Nobody needs to be told that actions have consequences. In terms of being on the same page, those things should just be discussed.

From someone college-age, I haven't heard of that honestly. I know it exists, but I didn't know it was popular among younger couples. Personally, I find that a little weird.

What happens if someone violates the contract? That sounds a bit too Sheldonish. I knew a guy drawing up the requirements for marriage. Never found a taker though.

So funny! I thought the same thing, my friend who told me about this and knows someone involved in a relationship with this agreement said that the consequences would involve “stern action such as coaching, warning “. Seems almost like boarder line verbal/mental abuse.

Anyway, glad this doesn’t sound like a common thing!!
