Curly Girl Method

Lauren, on December 19, 2018 at 10:44 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 37
Any brides-to-be doing the Curly Girl Method? I want to start tomorrow and get my hair back to looking amazing before the big day! I've got 4 months so I'm sure my hair will be looking much better by then!

Basically most hair products on the shelves are terrible for your hair. And I'm trying to get my hair back to being natural and healthy. Right now it's a frizzy mess. With the curly girl method you dont use shampoo with sulfates in it (or just no shampoo at all) and use conditioner with no silicone in it. Also no heat (no really hot water, no hot blow dryer, no straightener or curling iron). No brushing or combing your hair. You can use a shower comb while you shower to get tangles out but no other combing or brushing. And when you dry your hair, you just kinda scrunch it up and squeeze the water out.

I am a curly girl and I love it. I HIGHLY recommend finding someone in your area to do a Deva Curl cut and using the deva curl products. It has been a LIFE CHANGER for my hair. It went from poofy and frizzed our to beautiful tame curls. It looks amazing everyday and is the healthiest it’s ever been.

I'm not sure what that is. Does it have sulfates in it? If not, that's good! The sulfates are what's terrible for your hair. And the silicone in most conditioners. There are tons of women who do the curly girl method and still use shampoo. Smiley smile

I got a big chop 3 years ago and I couldn't be happier. I first started with the Deva Curl method and used their products for a while, then tried She Moisture and now I'm using a Dominican brand called Afro Love. Jojoba oil is my best friend now, for styling my hair and I even use it as a face moisturizing. I don't use heat, chemicals, parabens, silicones or sulfates on my hair. I shampoo 1-2 times a month, because shampooing my hair every time I wash my hair leaves it kinda dry.

Show me your hair. Here is mine:

I didn't really know what the curly girl method was but when I read your description it turns out I've been inadvertently already doing it for a little over a year lol.

I brush my hair maybe once a month, almost never blow dry or straighten my hair, and only wash it every 2-3 days. When I do use As I Am coconut cleansing conditioner. Once every few washes I will use Garnier shampoo without parabens, SLS, sulfates, etc because it gives a better wash to keep the scalp clean.

When I get out of the shower I just towel dry my hair (squeezing, not rubbing) and scrunch in my new miracle product Miss Jessie's Multi Cultural Curls. It is AMAZING and the product I have been searching for all my life (not even exaggerating. It's that good, for my hair at least).

I used to HATE my hair because it was so difficult to make look good and I would blow it out just to control it. Now that I've been doing this method I have mostly good hair days! I also wear it down almost every day (I used to wear it up SO much just to hide the frizz/craziness)

Your hair looks amazing!!! I can't wait to start this method. I did my final "cleansing" wash with a shampoo that has sulfate in it to rid of any buildup. Didnt use any conditioner or styling products. I'll post a pic of my hair in a bit. I bought suave essentials (the coconut one) and it is curly girl approved. Smiley laugh I also got some conditioning sprays and a curl setter of some sort. I wont use it all the time but everything I got is free of silicone, sulfate, and bad alcohol. Smiley smile

I plan to go shampoo free for at least a month and after that I may try and find a CG poo to use.

I started CGM a few weeks ago! There's a FB group that is insanely helpful. I've already noticed a difference in frizz and curl definition just a few weeks in. Figuring out your porosity and moisture needs is game changing!

I actually joined a fb group last night. I wonder if we are in the same one!
I havent done the porosity check yet but I did elasticity check and it seems good...I think. Lol. It stretches a bit and then returns to its same curl. Doesnt break or return to a different curl form.

Thank you! My hair is actually a little more curly than it looks now. So I'm hoping this method will bring out more curl/waves Smiley laugh

I hope it works! For me, I couldn't not brush or comb my hair. I'd look insane. And we live in Colorado so if I washed my hair during the day in the winter, I'd just have to stay inside until it dried. I have been using Ovation Cell Therapy for the past 3 months and it's changed my hair for me, in the most amazing way. I've seen noticeable growth, which is crazy in that short of time. I also bought a great leave in conditioner & heat protectant, and I take daily vitamins for hair/skin/nails and sleep on a silk pillowcase.

We might be! The one I'm in says something about Curly Girl Support Group, I think. Those ladies are amazing and so helpful. I knew without even testing that I was high porosity. My hair sucks up water like crazy and is pretty damaged from 20+ years of flat ironing. I'm excited to finally embrace my curls and get my hair much healthier.
