Custom Invitation Design Cost?

Dana, on March 26, 2018 at 9:06 PM Posted in Planning 0 6
A good friend is getting started in her graphic design career, and has offered to design our invitations (to help build her portfolio, and because we’re not looking for anything too fancy or complicated). I’m insisting on paying her, because design is labor and artists should *always* be paid, but I’m unsure of what the going rate would be. Can any designers or folks who hired designers weigh in?

A few details:

- We only want a double-sided invite and an RSVP postcard
- She would not be printing ANYTHING (we would upload her design to VistaPrint or something similar)
- She doesn’t have a “rate,” as she has never done this before

Thanks in advance for any help!

I personally think it depends on how custom it is. Are they just uploading a template and adding your info to it? Are they water coloring the entire invite for you to print later, etc.? For example, I looked at a person who had their pricing:

    Invitations - $550 design fee
    RSVP - $350 design fee
Info card - $350 design fee

Thank you card - $150 design fee

But again, thats just one person and also depends on quality and what they're doing. Sorry I couldn't be more help

I'm a graphic designer and I'm creating my own invites. Designs for wedding invitations are pretty easy to conceptualize and execute. I personally wouldn't charge more than $60 for the double-sided card and $20 for the rsvp card (since it'll be an extension of the invite). It wouldn't take me longer than 2 hours to complete.

I'm a designer as well and of course it depends on how detailed everything is but for a basic wedding invitation, it shouldn't take very long. The prices ACD posted are pretty insane, I would never pay that much EVER. And honestly if I offered to design something for a friend, I personally wouldn't charge anything. if they insisted on paying me, I'd say, just take me out to dinner and we will call it even :-) But that's just me. I'd ask your friend what they would like, if they aren't coming up with a number, maybe offer $100? Unless you are having them do something crazy personal design wise (like a custom art drawing of you and your FS or something that is going to take them hours upon hours to design), $100 is more than generous in my eyes.

Thank you for the input! We really just want something simple; black background, simple sans-serif text, and a couple gold off-center shapes for accent. There are like 50 pre-made, free designs out there that we’d be totally happy with since we’re really not that picky about it, but I want to give my friend the opportunity to flex her newly-honed design skills Smiley smile

She poked around online to find “going rates” for design, and thinks that $125 would be a “discount” for a friend... I don’t know whether or not that seems appropriate, but I can afford it and I’m in no position to contest it since I’m not in a design field myself.

Here’s hoping everything goes smoothly and I can easily get them printed!

I paid $60 on fiverr.com for invitation, RSVP, and website card design plus thank you cards. We had them printed at a local print shop.

Was that $60 for the whole lot of cards or $60 each?
