Custom Wedding Bands from Family Jewelry

Victoria, on June 30, 2021 at 12:42 PM Posted in Planning 1 5

Hi!

Has anyone had custom wedding bands made from old family jewelry? We have gold family jewelry that matches my engagement ring which we would love to have welded into our wedding bands, as it would be sentimental (and hopefully cheaper?) However, most of the information I have found online has been custom wedding bands when the couple is still purchasing new metals. I have no idea what the price point would be for the labor of taking old jewelry and making it into new rings.

If anyone has information or recommendations on this, I would appreciate it!

(And if anyone has recommendations for jewelers who could do this in NC or GA, even better.)

Hi!! I'm from Georgia, and we used a local Jeweler in our town (Milledgeville).

We used FH's and my mom's old wedding rings to make my e-ring. They were both 10K gold and were the e-ring and wedding band soldered together. I told them the design I wanted ( link to photo of ring ), and the size I wanted my band to be (1.5mm I think, whatever the smallest one was).

I think the cost ended up being like $800? The jeweler took the cost of the gold leftover and put it towards the total of the ring. We didn't have a wedding band made because there wasn't enough gold leftover, plus there's one online that I fell in love with.

Granted, I could have chosen one online that was cheaper, but we both liked the idea of having it be sentimental. I'd suggest getting quotes from jewelers in your area that do custom pieces, and comparing them!

From what I understand, it’s generally not more cost effective (potentially more expensive) to have existing gold jewelry melted and made into something new. That said, as PP mentioned, it’s very common for jewelers to accept gold trade-in as payment. If you just wanted a bit of the gold welded into your new ring, that sounds super realistic!

Thank you for this! I had no idea how they would use leftovers. I'll definitely speak to a few and see what they could do.

You're welcome! We weren't sure either, so we asked them and they told us about seeing what the value of the leftovers were and applying it to the total cost!

I love custom jewelry with sentimental value, so good luck with everything!! I hope it all works out the way you want!
