Cutting the cake at a DIY wedding.

Jenna, on March 19, 2014 at 8:05 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 16

Any ideas on how to handle cutting the cake, for the guests not the ceremonial cut, at an extremely tight-budgeted DIY wedding. I'm already double over my budget and trying to cut back while still having a wedding left, so paying a person isn't really feasable. I suggested the groom cut(It'd be more traditional, AND he has a great eye for measurements being a quality controll inspector at a tool manufacturer) while I handed pieces out to guests, but that made him nervous. He suggested cupcakes, but I feel robbed by that idea.

It's going to be a beach themed church wedding if that gives anybody ideas.

I am sorry to vote against you but I agree with the cupcakes. Plus you can make them super cute and have different flavors. It seems like a simple solution to me

Im doing a full DIY wedding on a very tight budget and we are doing cupcakes beacuse its easier than trying to cut the cake BUT maybe u can see if a bridesmaid or parent would like to help serve up the cake after the ceremonial cutting

I agree cupcakes. Do a small cake for you guys to actually do the ceremonial cut on and then have enough cupcakes for guests. That way no one is robbed of the cutting and you don't have to worry about having someone actually cut the cake for guests Smiley smile

That or cake pops are a good idea as well

What if you just get a small cake for you and your husband to cut and then have cupcakes out for the guests. That way you get your traditional cake cutting for you two and the rest can help themselves.

We had two friends/helpers take over the cutting and passing after we had ours.

If you still want to "cut the cake" you can do cupcakes with a small cutting cake on top

We found someone with cake cutting experience on our guest list and they were honored to serve it out with the help of my bridesmaids

We are having a 6" topper cake layer for cutting and then cupcakes for the guests. We chose 4 fabulous flavors - a dozen each. Our wedding will be a simple beach ceremony and there are almost a dozen kids, so cupcakes seemed to be the smart / efficient way all the way around.

You should try and see if you have a banquet waitress or waiter on your guest list they will know how to cut the cake or someone with culinary experience. I think that you will find better luck than you and your husband doing it. You can get a cake cutting guide at Wilton.com

Shoot. I can cut up a cake like no one. It's not that hard. Start with the bottom tier and cut about 3 " long, straight across, then just cut slices about 1" thick. Wish I could draw you a picture. I literally can cut 100 slices of cake in about 10 minutes.

Karen, I wish you were on my guest list. LOL. I'm going with a cake that looks like a sand-castle made from square tiers. 5 tiers that look like 3 basically. A single 12" square, topped by a double 8" and a double 4". I'm adding "towers" made of rice crispies and coated in graham crumbs, so that will be additional dessert too. A single 4" would be plenty for the aniversary layer, but it looked funny on my sketches.

I can bake and decorate the thing no problem. I could probably cut it, too, but I just don't trust myself.

What i did was i asked an aunt on my side and one from his side to cut the cake for the guests. I know many people do that because it does save them money, you just give them a corsage or whatever.

I would also urge you to consider cupcakes. It might not be exactly what you had in mind, but it will help put your mind at ease on the day-of. We are having a small "cutting cake" just for the cutting ceremony and having cupcakes on display for our guests.

I'd go with cupcakes as well. The last thing I'd want to do on my wedding day is worry about cutting and serving cake and possibly getting frosting on my dress!

I like the idea of getting a smaller cake and then doing cupcakes for the guests. I'd just put them ou and let guests come get a cupcake when they want.
