Dancing in gown...tips?

Margaret, on April 15, 2016 at 8:20 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 27

FH and I have been taking dance lessons...last night I asked our instructor if he's heard feedback from brides on dancing in their gowns. His suggestion, and what he's heard from brides, is "costume change"... I've considered this, but had decided to stay in my gown. Sooo. Any tips on not stepping on, tripping over, making a complete disaster mess of my gown during dancing?? Yes, it will be bustled.

As long as it's bustled, you will be fine. I can show you pics that will make you laugh Smiley smile

Like Tina said, as long as it stays bustled and is hemmed to the right length, you will be fine. I stayed in my dress all night and the only part that was dirty was the train, (and it wasn't That bad). Just have fun :-) Dresses can be cleaned, the memories last forever.

Mine will be bustled as well and I'm just assuming it will be fine.

Personally, I don't like second dresses/reception dresses, I feel it takes away from the magic and I don't want to change out of my dress ever! I'm glad you aren't truly considering this option!

I'm sure your dress will be fine once bustled, but do you have a lot of layers on the inside? I would think that might make it easier to trip over. If those could be "removable", I would think that would be the only way of making it less to trip over.

I'm worried about mine because even though it will be bustled, it's also very poofy.

Following! I'm doing the costume change for a special dance my dad and I are doing (it would actually be impossible to jitterbug in my gown, haha) but I'm putting my dress back on after that. And I'm nervous about our first dance in it!

I am not doing a costume change. I want to spend all night in that gorgeous dress! I don't think I have seen a bride trip on her dress (oh God, knocks on wood so I didn't jinx myself!) So I think you will be fine :-)

Mine isn't poofy, really. But I'm a certified klutz, and after our lesson last night, so is FH!! Lol...nah, he'll be great! I want to stay in dress, ok....is this strategy nuts: I was considering getting a long skirt similar in size, length, and bulk to my dress to wear during lessons/practice. I might look like a goof but will help maybe?

I actually am changing, but I hate the idea of calling it a 'costume change'. Our first dance is heavily choreographed, and there's no way FH and I would manage it without me being in a shorter gown. I found a very cute, right past knee-length dress from BHLDN for $100 and added a fun orange petticoat.

We've since decided to do two couple dances. We will do a very short 1-2 minute hold-and-sway first dance when we enter because my FMIL really wants pics of our first dance in my wedding gown. Right before dinner ends, I will change, and we will open the dance floor with the choreographed dance and parent dances.

My mom is making my gown , which is very poofy, and she's putting ribbons on the front so I can tie the front of my dress up which I think will help with dancing.

I'm actually concerned about this too (slightly) because mine will be pretty poofy and we are going to do a more complex dance (I am a dancer and he likes to think he is haha). Buuuuuut we will make it work. I will not be changing into another gown

I was told just to practice a few moves with FH before actually dancing in front of people to get used to how your dress moves.

I LOVE TO DANCE! My gown is form fitting and my train is long so I have opted to do a "costume change" as when the party starts it's ON and POPPIN!

We've also been taking dance classes and have been learning 3 different dance styles for our first dance. At first I was completely against a second dress, I am absolutely in LOVE with my dress, and it cost my mom a good deal of money.

I think it might have been last week, when we were learning some serious, drips, dips & lifts that I realized that maybe my dress wasn't going to work. I have a more poofy-ish, A-Line dress with a pretty long train. The bustle definitely takes it off the floor and when its finished being hemmed it will be at the perfect length. But I feel like the moves wont be as pretty or even noticeable with the cut of my skirt.

I decided to look for a 2nd dress to change in just for the dance (then I'll go back to my wedding dress) and I'll also probably wear it for our after-party/bar hopping.
