David's Bridal Mesh Vs. Chiffon

NatHam, on February 24, 2017 at 11:28 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 17

I have looked up previous discussions about this, but most of what I am finding is from a year or two ago. I am letting the girls pick out their own dress. They all have to be the same color, length and similar fabric. Soooo, at David's bridal they have mesh and chiffon. To me they took pretty similar (online), I don't live close to one to go look, so has anyone recently bought a mesh or chiffon or both and can you see the difference? I am mainly concerned about the color not being exact. I want my girls to have a big option to pick from.

I would love to see pictures of mismatched bridesmaid dresses, even if they aren't chiffon or mesh!

You can order swatches if you would like, however I was between mesh and chiffon as well and went with the mesh. The mesh is more stretchy of a material and my BM all agreed that it was the more comfortable fabric of the two. However what sold me was that if you spill water or whatever on chiffon, there will be a water stain when it dries, however this does not happen with mesh. I also preferred the feel of the mesh over the chiffon, it almost felt softer. But just from looking at them, there are no differences.

IMO- I went with mesh. I feel like chiffon looks kinda cheap and like tissue paper. Mesh is more flowy and soft. Yes, I can definitely tell the difference.

Thanks ladies, I agree @Caitlin. I had a chiffon dress for a wedding and I spilt pop on it and it looked terrible for the rest of the night. I am pretty relaxed, so I just don't want the satin or something 100% different!

They are different fabrics entirely. I'd get a swatch to see what you like more.

odds are chiffon is woven and mesh is a synthetic cut material.

Those two fabrics are completely different. At DB, the mesh fabric is softer and has more of that flowy feel while their chiffon, especially their crinkle chiffon, is more stiff. Also the chiffon has a very tight liner underneath, I have a friend who wore one as a BM and the liner of every BM's dress broke over the course of the day. When I had a bride come in asking for chiffon, I showed her the chiffon but also the mesh because the mesh is generally the loon she's going for. The mesh fabric is also a lot more comfortable. The texture and structure of the dresses in those two fabrics are completely different, I strongly recommend going in person to see the dresses. ETA: From my understanding from when I worked there, the issues with the liner of the chiffon dresses was a fairly consistent one and the ripping of the liner I mentioned was not a totally isolated incident.

My bridesmaids dresses are mesh. I had my sister and SIL try on dresses, they tried chiffon and mesh and the mesh was more comfortable to them so we went with the mesh.

Mesh and tulle are the same thing, yes?

I personally like the look of the chiffon more, but I haven't seen the quality of DB materials. Definitely get a swatch to see what you like more.

@AK- No. Mesh is like a jersey knit, tulle is the same fabric veils are made with.

We went with mesh over chiffon, it was much more comfortable and flowy, which the girls all liked!

The colors may look a little off depending on the type of chiffon and color. I'd again advise going into a store and taking dresses from each fabric, same color, and do a side-by-side. If you mix, I personally think their crinkle chiffon won't look right next to mesh because of stiff it is. Their regular chiffon maybe.

I have my girls wearing DB plum and told them short and chiffon, mesh, or lace/combo. One bought chiffon and two have lace/mesh combos. In the store I personally thought they looked ok together, but I am no fashionista. To me it was good enough.

I've worn two of the mesh DB BM dresses. One of the brides said we could choose any dress we wanted in a certain color. One girl wanted a satin dress and the salesperson was highly advising against doing a fabric different than the rest of the girls. Maybe if you have 2 girls in mesh and 2 in chiffon it'd be okay, but might look weird if 3 are in mesh and 1 is in chiffon... unless the chiffon girl is your MOH and you want her in something different.

@Mkebride. We are doing plum and short also. I was looking at letting them pick a dress between those fabrics. It is so hard to decide online and with living so far away from David's Bridal it is hard to go look. I ordered swatches

It depends on the dresses. For my sister's wedding there was one BM in chiffon and the rest of us were in mesh. For that particular dress, it wasn't obvious it was different but we tried on a few different mesh and chiffon dresses and some of the chiffon dresses were noticeably different while some appeared the same as the mesh.

I'm a stylist at David's Bridal and always recommend the mesh over the chiffon. First, the chiffon has zero stretch to it. It also has an inner layer that is a lot tighter then the outer layer. Due to the lack of stretch and inner layer, for someone with bigger hips or bigger butt, they normally have to size up 2 sizes to accommodate for the tighter layer otherwise you will see noticable creases and wrinkles in the crotch area. And since they have to size up to accommodate the hips, they normally end up having to pay ridiculous alteration fees to get the top altered to fit properly. With the mesh dresses, they will fit every body shape and size perfectly and a curvier girl won't need to size up for the hips. Also, the chiffon tends to wrinkle easily and need to be ironed while the mesh almost never wrinkles. They colors for the mesh and chiffon are the exact same. The only difference seen in the colors is between mesh/chiffon and satin. Plum is darker in satin then in the mesh and chiffon
