So.....I'm trying to decide which way to go with my legal last name after we're married and then I thought... Hey! Let me ask how others are making this decision. So...please share which choice you are making and why. Any pros and cons you've considered.. Etc. Thanks in advance! ...

I’m just laughing at “badly Americanized version of a Serbian name” 😆 I’m originally from that area & I’m very familiar with broken US pronunciation of Serbian names, so now I’m trying to imagine what his name is haha.

I'm super attached to my last name. My first name is very common so I feel like I always got my identity from my last name. My last name very clearly represents my heritage so I've always been proud of it. I'm also best friends with my dad and our last name will not be getting carried on anymore so part of me would like to do something to honor it in some way. My FH's last name is very simple and plain so thinking about having a very common first name and then a very plain last name has been hard for me because it does not feel like "me". However, it is very important to him that I take his last name. We are buying a house directly after the wedding and also not going on our honeymoon until September so due to all of the documents involved in both of those, I am not changing my name at all until around October. I'm still not exactly sure what I will decide but I'm happy I have a few months to feel it out and see how I feel before I make a decision.

We are both changing out last names to create a cohesive family name: MyLastName HisLastName. Yes, our children will have a double barreled last name, but we are sure they will figure it out when it is time for them to get married.

I'm just keeping my name! I love my name and don't want to part with it. I also don't love FH's last name 😂 our kids will have hyphenated last names.

Love that ❤️ Here in NY I know so many families whose children have two last names, so I wouldn’t worry about it!

Ever since FH and I started talking marriage I’ve wanted to take his last name, so that’s what I’ll be doing! As much as I love my family and my current last name, I can’t wait to be Mrs. Ethan Br_______!

Dragišić is the original name and Draggich ( part of the family spells it with one g and part with two) and they pronounce it Drag Itch

Ahh me too! I've always been Allie B. But I will be taking my FH's name as well!

Oh no... that’s too funny 😆 It’s the worst how Serbian names often get “itch” in US pronunciation. Yes, I’d keep your name for sure lol

I told him we could both change our names to the original and I'd be fine with that. I just can't deal with the "new". He doesn't want to change it at all 🙄🙄

Lol... Yes, the original actually has a nice meaning (“drag” means dear). It should be spelled Dragishich but that would still give you “itch” in US pronunciation lol. Or you could spell it Dragishic & then people would pronounce it as “chic” which would be kind of cool 😃

I said it was important to him but that I (emphasis on I) decided to take his name. I made the choice to do so. My name change doesn't change all the things I've accomplished in life so it's not that big of a deal for me.

Other than pure laziness and convenience (lol) I’m keeping my last name because I’m closer with my mom’s side of the family and her maiden name is my current middle name. Traditionally my last name would become my middle name but I don’t want to lose my mom’s name

Really? How does that work? Should you mind giving an example?
