Decorating a mirrored wall at Reception

Chloe, on February 9, 2015 at 4:07 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 8

Hello! Our reception hall (at a Community Center) has:

- One (shorter) wall that has a mirror from the floor to about 8 feet up.

- One long wall that is floor to ceiling windows with a door & balcony

- One blank white wall

- One wall that has the entrance door / cabinets / door to the kitchen etc. (no need to decorate much on this side)

The ceilings are very high and we cannot suspend anything from the beams or anything like that. The floors are shiny hardwood.

How would you decorate such a space since we can't hang anything from above? Twinkle lights around the top/perimeter? Draped flag garlands on the walls? A combination? Wish I could find photos of something like this, but haven't been able to.

Also - would you put the dance floor by the mirror or would that be weird watching ourselves dance? Maybe incorporate "curtain" lights or tulle that hangs down somehow??

Thanks for any advice!

Well, I really love the mirror in many ways. If we hung lights along the top, it would be doubly pretty?

Also, budget it a key factor for us. I can't imagine coming up with that much fabric, nor renting it. We'd like to add some pizzazz to the space without spending more than a few hundred dollars.

I do have access to a lot of tulle (leftover from a relative's wedding), but I don't LOVE tulle very much so I'd be picky about how it was used...

^This venue has 2 glass walls and 2 concrete block walls. They've permanently added white twinkle lights along the ceiling beams.

I think the mirror wall would make a great backdrop for head table. I would also look into renting a pole and drapery system to cover that patio window and 1st door area. Leaving the door further away from the mirror accessible for smokers. I think the pole a drape system will soften the look. Be sure to rent lots of drape so it thick to keep the sunlight from shining threw. The pole and drape system you can rent and set up yourself this should cost no more then $150

Just a tip about the mirrored wall: my sister's head table at her wedding was in front of a mirrored wall. If you do this, you WILL need to cover up the mirror. The head table is photographed quite a bit at weddings, and any photographs of something in front of the mirror will include whatever is reflected in the mirror (so the photographer, the flash, and the rest of the background). So I wouldn't recommend putting the head table in front of the mirror unless you want to cover it up.

I don't think the dance floor would be that weird in front of it though.

To respond to Nancy, we are not allowed to do anything from the ceiling beams. They are too high and it would be a big challenge, so the venue said no.

No smokers in our guest list, thankfully. Smiley smile

I will admit taking photo's can be a challenge but not impossible, I think the photo's must be taken from an angle. A plus is, it limits the amount of photo's taken with food in your mouth.
