Decorating Large Space

Miranda, on January 27, 2017 at 1:03 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 13

Hi Ladies,

I am looking for ideas & advice on decorating a large space similar to the space pictured, which we will be hosting our reception in. Firstly, I am working with a large (140'x80') open area that needs to be divided, roughly in half, to make the space feel smaller. Professional draping will not work into my shoestring decor budget. My thought is to purchase from a wholesale distributor and drape fabric/tulle/lights/etc from the rafters to cut the space in half. Then, use similar themed decor to spruce up the space.

Does anyone have experience decorating such a large area and could give some advice? Any recommended companies to purchase bulk amounts of tulle or fabric from? I would love to see and hear about creative ways to beautify this blank space!

My vision is for it to be simple, classy & a touch rustic.

Thanks!

That job will take a huge amount of tulle and lights or whatever else you choose. No matter what, it will be costly.

I guess I should add that I am not looking for wall-to-wall coverage. Just hoping to somehow make the space feel a little less open.

I think draping fabric may be the easiest way. Not sure how much it will cost. Are you using the entire space?

Remember when you add guest tables chairs, bar, dj area, food area (if buffet) cake table, table for place cards...etc that takes away space. ..how many people on your guest list?

@Lauren, the entire space is available to me, but I would like to only use half because it's such a large area, which is why I'm trying to think of ways to sort of block off the back half. @Che, Guest list is just over 200, so tables, chairs and all the extras will definitely help fill it in a little!

Wow, that is huge. Nothing is going to be "cheap" but you might try looking at Shindigz.com. It specializes in proms............ NO, I'm not suggesting your wedding should look like a prom. But they have bulk materials at prices much less than I found anywhere else. Prices a class of teenagers can afford. I used their blue metallic eyelash material to create a backdrop for son and dil's sweetheart table.

I would expect you could just use just normal 8-10 ft drapes, since the eye will not travel to the roof line often. If you want to create a canopied look, you could try creating smaller banners and distance them on the rafters...............

Thinking OUTSIDE the box........One other idea... is using balloons. There is a plastic like tape with holes that you thread the balloon knots through to hold them together. If you were to use this tape, you would not have to use the costly helium. just lots of huffing and puffing. Depending on the colors and the way you set them up, balloons (especially the white PEARL and metalic ones) don't have to look like a birthday party.

I got some tulle from here, very inexpensive. I didn't get the quantity you'd be looking for, but they shipped mine relatively quickly.

Looks like draping tulle would be easy with that ceiling, if you buy a huge amount of it. I'm thinking something like this

    Does the building have electricity?

    Is that a dirt floor?

    I like JessieJackson's design.

    Balloons, not so much.

I also vote for something like what @JessieJackson posted. That being said, it looks as if your wedding is in a riding arena in a barn, and that is something to consider. Electricity access may be an issue if it is anything like any arena I have ever been in, and I have been in a lot of them. At the very least, you need to be sure to let guests know where they will be for the wedding/reception. Not only is the arena floor loose dirt, many folks may have allergies to horses, hay, alfalfa or something else that can cause them discomfort and distress, if not actual medical issues. Something to think about...

I just got 60"x216" sheer draping fabric from amazon for about $8 per piece. Search for the brand "Jenin"

I would say that is a nice space for 200 people with their tables and chairs exactly for the reason that @Che stated.

You have to fit at least 20 tables with 10 chairs each. You need space for your sweetheart table, for the cake table. The bar, the dance floor...

I think that you can work with this in a horizontal way... other thing you can do is create a 'welcome area' where you just drape a little bit and put some vintage sofas (like a lounge area) and it will be a great place to put escord cards, gifts/cards table, guest book table. You can also do a photobooth and that will take some extra space.
