Decorating our own wedding broom! Share your pictures and DIY tips!!

Mrs.Droopy, on April 15, 2014 at 4:56 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

Ladies, have any of you decorated your own broom to jump? FH and I were given a blank broom and the crafty side of me can see the potential, but it is honestly a project that I can't even imagine where to start. I dont want to leave this to become a last minute project.

Any pics of some you have completed?

I will be decorating mine but it will be a rainy day sort of a project when I get a little closer. Some red and white ribbon which I already got on sale from michaels and maybe a flower on it as well.

Jumping the broom is really popular in African-American weddings although it originated in another culture. I've heard of it held off the ground so that whomever (husband or wife) jumps it the highest without touching is will rule the marriage and laid on the floor with whomever jumping the furthest past it ruling the marriage. It identifies the first thing the couple does together as husband and wife.

It is actually a British Isles (Pagan) tradition which has been adopted by other cultures. I am Pagan and will be having the jumping the broom ritual at our ceremony as well.

OP, I only paid a little over $10.00 for my broom plus shipping. I looked at other places and they wanted outrageous prices for them. I bought mine from this seller on etsy:

And you can decorate it however you want. Smiley smile

Cracker Barrel Restaurants & Publix Supermarkets sell cinnamon brooms that are made in GA and smell great. Only about $5 and you can decorate it however you like.

Thanks ladies! I've seen some really simple and really decorative ones. I can wrap my mind around the task a little better now. But I'm surely not paying the $80 to $180 prices that I've seen! I mean.....this is the DIY forum. right?
