Decorating votives?

Mrs. S™, on October 1, 2011 at 7:39 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 18

All those who are much craftier than I am - so pretty much everybody :-),

I'd like to decorate my votive holders with some ribbon, but I have no idea what to use to glue the ribbon onto glass, and that can stand higher temperature from the candle. I used the search box and found every possible answer, with every following poster saying that is not going to work.

Does anybody have any expereince with that or know what would actually work?

Thanks!

I see them do it all the time, and it must work somehow. I have seen them especially on a Martha Stewart show. I'll check around and see what I can find.

Are the votives clear, or frosted? The reason I ask is, if they are frosted, you could use flameless candles.

Check w adhesive spray. I think there is also a high heat super glue. you would probably just need to brush it on...???

I am using adhesive spray but i'm also using flameless candles and not real candles.

Clear glass, and we wanted to use real candles. I actually don't have a rational explanation as to why ;-)

@JLu, I remember seeing your post, but it didn't come up again in my search! Thanks so much! So hot glue worked? It was just getting so frustrating because all the other posts I could find said:

    X: use Zdots

Y: Zdots don't work, use fabric glue

Z: Fabric glue shows on the ribbon, use doublesided tape

    W Doublesided tape doesn't work, use... :-)

It worked for me, Mrs. S! I was very careful when applying the glue to the seams of the ribbon so nothing would show. Essentially the flower hid the glue and I had measured the ribbon to the proper length to just fit around the votive so there wasn't excess. You could also make the ribbon slightly longer so you can make a small knot at the ends of it and then cut off the excess and hide it behind some sort of embellishment. Personally, even if it weren't for the seams, I would have wanted some type of relevant embellishment to jazz it up. I have personally never used Zdots and I think double-sided tape (from my experience) wouldn't work in this situation, but that may just be me. hehe

Make sure that you search for the supplies when Michael's or whatever craft store you are using has a sale to get the most bang for your buck! Smiley smile

My sister used fabric glue for all her wedding projects. She didn't have glass votives though, she put ribbon aroun her pillars. she did her ring pillow, guest book, champagne flutes, and others, just can't remember right now... but she used fabric glue lol. maybe it depends on the brand?

You ladies are golden, and will be largely responsible for my fabulous wedding lol! I might include that in the toast: "Thank you my WW buddies for all great ideas, inspiration and support! I would have been in the looney bin without you!" How's that? I'm off to Michaels as soon as FH wakes up. If ever, given that he had his bachelor party last night :-)

I used glue dots and a glue gun but found the glue gun was the way to go as it stays better. I brought home all of the votives and holders we used at the reception and my mom kept the biggest one. Smiley smile

Well, I'm back from Michaels equipped with a hot glue gun, stickers, flowers and ribbons. Now let's see if I can do this without glueing myself somewehere. If you don't hear from me any more, thanks for everything!

@FutureMrsHodges, I was told doublesided tape won't stick when the holder warms up.

YES use hot glue. I make soy candles in glass votive holders all the time and put ribbon on them and the hot glue works really well. Good luck hope to see pics soon.
