Delayed Homeymoon?

Marguerite, on April 26, 2023 at 10:12 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 8
We are getting married September 23rd of 2023. We held off honeymoon planning bc we were taking care of my FHs grandmother on Hospice. It was impossible to know if she would make it to the wedding and we just didn’t want to plan on being far from home just in case. She has since passed away and with less than 6 months I honestly don’t know if we could get everything organized and ready for extensive vacation. My FH was also recently laid off from his job which also throws a bit of a wrench in our plans. I always dreamed of getting into my getaway car bags packed and driving straight to the airport to start “the next big adventure” but it’s definitely starting to feel like I may have to compromise with myself a bit. I just started today seriously considering the idea of a delayed honeymoon(plus we wanted a tropical honey moon and we’re getting married right in hurricane season)…so for those of you that also decided on a delayed honeymoon I have a few questions:

1. How long did it take before you were able to go on your honeymoon?

2. Did you go anywhere special the night you did get married?
3. Do you have any regrets/things you wish goi did differently?
4. Place suggestions if you have any 😊

This is exactly what a mini-moon is for!

Our wedding is 10/07, and I just put the deposit down for our honeymoon (Caribbean cruise) which is scheduled for December. Originally i wanted to go elsewhere and was going to be waiting until may of 2024, but the cruise was on sale and now we can go for 2 weeks rather than one.
Original plan was to drive to either the Adirondacks or Poconos for a weekend after the wedding to just decompress and spend a little time away. Since pur honeymoon will be a few short months after the wedding we probably won't do the mini-moon.
If you are having a wedding with alcohol I would suggest leaving for your honeymoon the day after rather than that night, it will be a long stressful day get some sleep before traveling with your husband!
Cruises tend to offer good fare and pretty inclusive so not much extra money has to be spent than you want. Knowing where you live might give some better closer ideas. But waiting until the season and weather is perfect for your honeymoon makes more sense than trying to vacation during hurricane season

I 100% agree with Alyssa regarding a mini-moon! That way you still get a smaller vacation and time to decompress during your “omg we JUST got married” phase. Even if it’s just an in-town or close driving distance staycation where you book a spa, splurge on some fancy restaurants, etc, you can still make it very romantic and festive. FH and I are doing a destination wedding at Disney, so we’re staying at Disney for the remainder of the week to celebrate and then leaving for a two week honeymoon a month later. We decided to do it that way for several reasons: (1) we’ll still have something to look forward to after the wedding hype is over; (2) it’s easier for us to take time off work in blocks instead of a giant three week chunk (although my boss is still encouraging me to take more time off around the wedding lol); and (3) we’re going international, and the thought of packing a million things for the wedding and two weeks abroad just seemed overwhelming (not to mention getting a dog-sitter for that long); and (4) I’ve seen too many horror stories recently about people getting covid at their weddings and having to cancel the honeymoon, so we want time to recover if that happens. It actually worked out because we’ll be past main tourist season when we go, and the prices were much lower when we changed our dates. We actually just started booking our October honeymoon this weekend (we’re also a September wedding), so I think you still have plenty of time to plan!!

The logistics of leaving right away are a nightmare. We opted to leave for our honeymoon the Monday after our Saturday wedding. I felt like that was perfect because we were able to spend Sunday decompressing and packing for the honeymoon. The wedding day is exhausting and you just want to crash by the end of it. We did stay in a hotel on our wedding night because we felt like going home to our apartment was a bit meh lol. The mini-moon suggestions above are a great idea too if you want to hold off on your big honeymoon until after hurricane season.

Perhaps consider having your tropical honeymoon in your cold months? This would be a wonderful adventure to look forward to during dreary days.

While getaway scenes in a bridal suit is quite glam like in Steve Martin's "Father of the Bride", the logistics Hannah mentions are a real annoyance. Someone has to clean and pack up decor, flowers, and your wedding attire. I didn't have much but still needed 2 hotel carts and 2 friends to help clear out my hotel room (husband dealt with a car-starting issue).

We waited a year before going on our honeymoon. We had to wait because we were not able to go anywhere at the time. So we took a few days and went to Ocean City, Maryland. We didn't have any regrets because we were planning on going honeymoon a year later. We went to Cancun, Mexico for 7 days 6 nights. We had a great time.

You go to Mexico or Jamaica which great trips. Cruises are nice to go on as well. I did a cruise to Bermuda which was great. You can do a trip or cruise to the Bahama.

Oh thank you! That’s what I’m thinking we’re gunna end up doing. We found this beautiful spa up by the Finger Lakes. So I think we’re gunna go straight there after the wedding for a few days it’s like a 4 hour drive from us and that will be our mini moon and we’ll plan a bigger one to somewhere warm later on.

Yes I agree! You all have been so awesome with your suggestions. I always loved the idea of a getaway so I think we’ll have our getaway car take me to my parents house where our bags will be packed in our car and we change into something comfortable and drive to our mini moon and then we’ll plan a bigger honey moon later on.
