Deposit for Flowers for the big day?

Lyndsay, on September 10, 2019 at 10:58 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8

Hi all, I am exploring my options with florists and have noticed there are a lot of variances. For example there is one I like and the total amount due would come to just over $2,000 but she wants a deposit of $1500. Dose that makes sense? Others are asking for a date holding deposit of $100-200 or a percentage of the final estimate amount. Does it seem reasonable to pay almost the whole balance for wedding flowers (less maybe $550)?

Yikes! Unfortunately some vendors tend to ask for a specific percentage. Our photographer wanted 50% down as the deposit. We really had to pull our resources as I was not expecting such a big deposit and finances were a little tighter then.

We had to put 50% down of the initial estimate.

Our invoice for flowers was over $6,000. We had to put a $2,500 deposit 3-4 months before the wedding and then pay the balance one month before. Flowers are expensive, if they make an order from the supplier and then you have to cancel they are probably out over 50% of total bill so it makes sense they want a larger deposit.

Asking for 50 percent doesn’t sound outrageous to me, but that’s the most I’d pay upfront.

I think 50% makes sense but asking for all but 500 is asking a lot. What if my guest count changes and I have less tables to decorate with centerpieces?

Our florist asks for a flat $200 deposit on all orders. The final balance is due a week before, but we could pay towards it in the meantime.

My florist deposit was pretty low like less than $400 simply because floral is something that's a work in progress, It typically can and will change way more than something like a DJ who is just providing a service. Idk that does seem like an awful lot. What if your adjustments are more than $500 worth? Tbh I changed my mind about a lot of floral arrangements and I was allowed to eliminate a few items I just didn't find necessary anymore. Your budget and ideas for floral decor could change in a year.

Im paying similarly (around the $2000 mark) for my florals and my deposit is much much lower. I think you should talk to your florist about it since things such as guest count and changing your mind about design are factors in how the flowers end up looking in the end. At the end of the day, it might also be because your florist orders from someone who requires a multiple month notice, so it could just simply be to make sure your florist doesnt get screwed over too. My florist orders her flowers 3 months in advance, so she could get away with a small deposit and also keeping herself safe. But if yours orders 6 months or more in advance, it might make sense why she needs such a huge sum. Talk it out. My Photographer/DJ actually made us pay upfront the full cost which we were not expecting, but again each vendor charges differently and there isn't really a rulebook
