Depositing checks addressed to your new name

Mrs. P, on October 21, 2015 at 1:12 PM Posted in Community Conversations 1 20

FH and I have received a few checks written out to "Mr. And Mrs. P". I do intend to change my name, but not until after our honeymoon. Has anyone had experience with depositing checks like this, especially into the person without that last name's account? FH has a bank without a branch here, and there is a deposit limit for depositing via his phone, so I have to do it at my bank.

We just went in together and both signed the back of the checks. No problem.

ETA: We also brought our "keepsake" copy of the marriage license since we didn't have the official one yet.

Some said they were able to no problem, some had issues. Check out the last few pages of the WTF Wednesday thread for more information/advice.

I worked at a bank. At our bank, you would've had to have an account titled "Mr and Mrs P", but unless you were actually Mrs. P, you couldn't open the account.

I don't know why guests don't think of this! I always write my checks out to the groom.

Hopefully your bank is easier to work with, but call them now!

We both signed. I just signed with my maiden name and it wasn't an issue, but we did already have a joint account

All you have to do is write "For Deposit Only" no need to sign the checks. You will have to deposit the check into the bank, you can't cash the check. The bank will wait for the check to clear before you can take the money out.

We had to put my name on FH's account to deposit our checks, my name's not changed yet, they let me sign my maiden name even though my married name is on the checks but they had to go into a joint account. All but 3 of our checks were made out to both of us, using my new last name.

We had a joint account. If it says "AND" both have to sign and has to go into a joint account. If it says "OR" it can go into either [had it go into grooms].

We just had to send or bring in copy of marriage certificate. I am waiting to change my name until after honeymoon too. So bank changed it to my new name since they only needed marriage certificate [in my state it lists your new name on marriage certificate]. I deposited checks in maiden name first, then brought in name change, then deposited new checks. Took about 2 weeks because I had to wait for marriage license to be returned and bank to process.

Also, DH and I have 1 joint account and each have our own account. If you don't want to have everything joint, this is a good option! If it says Mr AND Mrs... has to go into a joint.

Wow, lots of conflicting info. OP, just call your bank and ask. This is something they deal with regularly, so they should be able to easily answer it for you.

DH deposited all the checks that were addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Newlyweds without a problem. He used the mobile deposit on his banking app. I didn't even sign those checks and they went through fine.

Honestly, I did this all myself and had zero problems. I didn't even have DH sign the ones that said Mr. & Mrs. Jim Irwin and still had no problems.

We even had a check made out to the WRONG name (Jim & Raelyn SMITH), where Smith is Jim's mom's maiden name, which is not either of our names haha and I even cashed that one just fine. Kinda scary actually.

ETA - the only one's DH deposited were the ones that were made out only to him.

ETA2 - Honestly, I woulnd't even call and ask, they will probably tell you the most strict rules. I would just try to deposit them and see what happens.

We went in together, and I deposited all of our checks into my account. I am not changing my name, so the bank just told H to sign his name, and had me sign both my maiden name and the name on the checks.

I deposited all of our checks through the ATM and had no issues. I signed First Maiden Married even though the account was First Maiden.

I work at a bank currently. While every bank has slightly different polices (resulting in brides on here having very different experiences), I will recommend based on my bank's procedures. Have your FH go with you to the bank and explain to the teller that you'd like to deposit the check into your account or cash it (depending on what you'd like). Both parties will need to sign the check, you will likely need to sign with both your maiden and married names. Your FH may need to may the check payable to just you and the teller can tell you how if you don't know already. Be prepared to show both of your IDs and if you have it, bring your unsigned married license.

The bank may require you to wait until after the wedding to do anything with the check, but I would definitely ask them what you should do. I wouldn't endorse the back until you've spoken to some one at the bank.

I signed with the mrs. name even though i had not changed my name yet. I had one uncle give a check with my 'baptized name' which is my middle name. That was fine too, the bank people helped us out with what to sign.

It all depends on the bank.... maybe even the Rep you sit with.... My old branch manager was insane and constantly thought we were about to the audited by the Feds or something.... the amount of paperwork she'd require was ridiculous! GOD FORBID you couldn't prove a solid address (if you just moved and were living with a friend, if you lived on campus, if you were a live-in nanny, etc) she wouldn't let an account be opened for you. You had to bring in your lease, electric bills, etc. to prove you lived somewhere.....

The mobile deposit feature could save you a lot of problems though, smaller check amounts are not scrutinized. Their may just be a daily limit (i.e. you can deposit up to 1K per day).

We received checks with every name combination possible. We have a joint account, but I haven't changed my name yet. FH signed all the checks and went to the bank. I didn't sign anything, but he didn't have any problems.

For some reason I didn't have any trouble with this, but we are in a credit union, not a bank. I had to endorse all the cheques with my maiden name in the back, and they deposited them without a problem.
