*Depositing* Checks written out to Mr. & Mrs. His last Name....PROBLEMS

Sonya, on June 23, 2015 at 1:11 PM Posted in Married Life 0 28

Ugh! We received checks from a few guest written out to Mr. & Mrs. H, and we are having problems depositing until I change my last name. Well I was about to go next Friday to SS Office and change it BUT....realized I can't. I am going to Jamaica for a wedding July 23rd and can't change my passport. So, now the checks will have to sit for another month until I can get my name changed, new ID and open up a joint account with DH. Why do people write out checks with Mr. & Mrs. Don't they know the hassle they put you through with this or are they just not thinking? Anyone else dealing with this problem.

FYI: We also have already been to the bank to discuss this with them and we have to have my name changed over because I also have personal accounts that would affect me. DH is checking with his other Bank to see if he can deposit in his name only through his account......UGH!

Rant Ova!

Try depositing them in the ATM or with a banking app...I haven't changed my name (and our accounts are still not joint because we're lazy) and he deposited them, even the ones made out to my Nickname with his last name and didn't have a problem.

Most people don't realize or forget that there could be some trouble cashing and do it because they're excited for you. In their minds it the first thing that will be addressed to Mr. and Mrs. and they're excited about it. Do what you can to not have those checks sitting a month...I'd be pissed if I wrote a check that still wasn't cashed!

Do you not have a joint account?

I'm forced to deposit them in there, but at least my bank is small and knows me, so no issues there, Ij ust cant put it in my own personal account.

Did you try depositing them or cash? Hubbys bank let him sign them and put them into his account no problem. We are still waiting to get our certificate back to change my name and get a joint account.

Thanks Ladies. DH is going to call customer service today and explain to them. The Bank we went to was giving us a hard time. I'm going to tell him to try the ATM deposit and see if that works too.

Ya, you won't be able to cash them but you can deposit them. Because your checks are most likely more than $100, banks are less likely to make exceptions and let a customer and non-customer on the same check cash it.

ETA: Bring two forms of ID to deposit it, just in case. Drivers license and passport work well.

@Maltese I certainly agree about people being excited! We are going to contact anyone that were still having an issue with cashing their check. Hopefully your suggestions work

My grandma made one out to my married name - for the wedding shower. Face palm. I *can't* change my name for another 7 weeks.

Just go into the bank, you'll both need to be there, and it should be fine. Bank tellers get it, and usually they will take a copy of your marriage certificate and put it in your electronic file so once you do it once, you will be able to deposit checks like that going forward. I used to work at a bank, it happens quite a bit!

We had some like this and I had to go to the bank with my husband and show our marriage license and ID. They wouldn't let just him deposit it.

You could also open a joint account.

Yea try it on the App - I actually got a check the other day from a friend that was made out to "Raelyn Kendrick & Jim Irwin". Obviously we aren't married yet. I was able to deposit it no problem through chase's mobile app!

If you change your last name officially, you don't have to change your passport..you will just need to make your travel reservations in your maiden name when you travel with a passport.

I had one made out to my greek name (vs. my american/legal name of Denise). I signed my Greek name and english name underneath and it was no problem.

I also signed the back of the checks with my new name without changing my name yet. We had no problem depositing any of the checks.

I would try depositing them. Banks frequently don't want to cash checks when there is some irregularity like that, but depositing shouldn't be a problem. Definitely don't let them sit!!

@FutureMrsLepelis THANK YOU!! Was wondering the answer to that. So I can still go next week and officially change my SSC. My travel reservation was made in my maiden name awhile back.

Are you trying to actually cash them or deposit them? Depositing would be much easier because you can put it into an account with his name and just have him sign them all.

I think you can change your name prior to your trip. You would just bring your passport with your maiden name and your marriage cert. This will show that you recently got married and changed your name. People do it all the time.

@wildflowerbride I guess I wasn't clear about that in my OP. Yes, we only want to deposit them....not cash. Just didn't think the bank would give us such a hassle. They even wanted to make sure the check that was written to both of us in our Legal name had a comma between it. I wonder if this particular bank was just being a PAIN. We are going to try another bank.
