Deposits Refunded amid Covid-19

Tori, on March 23, 2020 at 11:17 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 4

Hey everyone. I wanted to gather your opinions and advice on getting deposits refunded. My venue told us unless we cut our guest count to 50 we would have to postpone. My state is now mandating less than 10 anyway. I was hoping to push everything back to fall 2020 and keep all vendors the same. My venue gave away the only date that worked after telling me I was only person left to reschedule and their "top priority." (haven't heard from them in a week and still haven't rescheduled, but thats another story itself.) I was looking at changing venues but didn't know if anyone had luck getting deposits back in this unique situation. I'm struggling with this with my videographer too and if I'm unable to get the deposit back, I likely won't be able to re-book anyone else due to the financial loss. He has limited availability and he always waits until I'm about to re-book to finally respond and say he's now booked.

Just looking for any suggestions from any brides would have been able to get back some of their deposits!! Thank you!

We got full refunds from our venue and officiant. All other vendors said they wouldn't give us a refund.

I think you should push a little harder. If you’ve given him several dates and he delays responding and then the date is booked that’s on him. Keep all your communications between the vendors just in case you want to pursue it when this is all over! All of my vendors agreed to postpone but none have agreed to an outright cancel at this point (although we haven’t pushed it since our State is not under mandates quite yet). If we can’t agree on dates my plan is just to continue to push out until we can find a date that works for everyone (which may mean 2021 and we would go ahead and do a small ceremony now and then do a vow renewal). I can’t stomach leaving any $$ behind.

I really think it depends on the venue. I literally became best friends with mine lol. When she called me to tell me we can't have the reception there, she offered to change the date or give me back my refund. I told her she's so amazing cause i know she doesn't have to. I'm very blessed to have found someone like that.

Hi Tori! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this right now! For the most part what we've heard from couples is that you will probably lose your deposit for outright cancellations (based on your original contract terms), but that lots of vendors are honoring your deposit and existing agreement if you can work together to reschedule the date!

I know it's really tough with so many couples looking rebook right now, but I'd be as proactive (and flexible) as possible about looking down a new date. You'll probably be able to reschedule for an earlier date if you're open to a Sunday or weekday wedding!
