Dessert Dilemma

Elizabeth , on February 7, 2021 at 2:53 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 64
So I keep hearing that cakes are a waste of money - no one likes cake and would rather drink than have a slice. My fiancée and I are planning on ordering a small cake for us to cut, but I’m on the fence about what kind of dessert to provide for our guests. My initial thought was to order cupcakes but if people really don’t want cupcakes then I would rather do something else. What I’m leaning toward now is doing a cookie bar - that way it’s something different from cake, I can have variety for guests with different tastes, and I can provide take-home bags for extras at the end of the night. As a guest, would you prefer cupcakes, cookies, or something else?

Thank you and happy wedding planning to all!

Maybe I'm an oddball but I like cake. If not cake, cake donuts (e.g. old fashioned). Cookies and whatnot are fine, but I prefer the traditional offerings.

I’ve never heard people don’t like cake lol and I would be disappointed hahah but it’s up to you two what you want! I think cupcakes and cookies would be cheaper perhaps!

As a guest, I'm always happy with whatever the couple picks out for dessert! Cupcakes are easy, and you could offer multiple flavors (which you can't do as easily with cake).

Personally I’m not a big cake fan myself. But, I want guests to be happy with what’s provided!

Definitely cake! My fiancé doesn’t want a grooms cake so he is picking out the cupcake flavors and he also wants cookies! People will eat what you provide and if not, more for you to take home! Lol

I wouldn't go as far as saying cakes are a waste of money, but I think cookies are a good idea! It's a much easier grab and go item. Another option, which I'm leaning towards for my wedding in addition to cake, may be a mini dessert table with cookies, macarons, mini pies, cheesecake bites etc. I love cake, but I've been to several weddings over the past few years and honestly once I'm drinking and dancing, I either don't want to sit down to eat a slice of cake or I totally forget cake is even available. If I see a table full of desserts, I'd check it out immediately!

I think a mini cake for you guys and then a dessert table, that could include some nice chocolates/truffles, brownies, cookies, cupcakes. That way there is variety and options for guest. Plus these are small items guest can take with them at the end of the night instead of slices or cake.

I definitely like the idea of something they can take with them, especially since we’re not currently planning on doing any kind of favors.

I’ve heard several people say that no one at the cake! I HATE waste so the last thing I want is a bunch of leftover cake.

I’m shocked- never heard of people not liking cake... if that’s the case, I just went on Pinterest & in the search engine, put cake alternatives wedding & BANG! So many alternatives!
Or- instead of 3 tiers get 2?

I have never heard of people hating cake. They look forward to it and expect it at a wedding. No one anywhere says "I hate cake so I'm excited for cookies instead". Those are the people who hate sugar, period. As a guest, I would prefer and expect a regular wedding cake, not cupcakes/cookies/other, as would everyone else I know.

Are these all your guests or random people who are not invited? Always ignore opinions of those not attending.

Who told you nobody likes cake? Cake is always one of the highlights of the reception! As a guest, I'd probably be disappointed to be served cookies and no cake Smiley sad

I also wouldn't recommend ordering a small cake for you and your FH to cut if you don't plan on serving any to your guests. This can lead to confusion and may even be seen as rude. I would recommend serving either cake or cupcakes!

This. I went to a wedding where the couple had a small cake for cutting, but didn’t actually serve cake to the guests. Everyone was super confused and waiting at their seats waiting to be served cake (not knowing that the table of pies were in lieu of the cakes). It was pretty awkward.

I never thought there would be confusion since I figured it was pretty common to do something other than cake for dessert. Definitely something for me to consider.
