Dessert Reception Timeline

Grace, on June 21, 2020 at 11:06 AM Posted in Planning 1 6
My fiance and I are are planning to have a simple ceremony with dessert reception in September. I'm really struggling with the timeline and could use some advice!

We are planning on the ceremony being at 2pm with the dessert reception following at the same location. My difficulty is with figuring out the timeline for photos, cake cutting, 1st dance, and father daughter and mother son dances. The venue is a church so it will be a dry wedding. We also could only afford the photographer for 4 hours. We are willing to do some of the photos before hand like bride and bridesmaids and groom and groom's man ones but the fiance and I are both really against the idea of doing a first look so those will have to be after. But I dont want a big gap were our guest are waiting on us you know?
I also could use some more ideas for the desserts we serve as of right now we will have cake and mini cheese cakes and punch. We have also looked into doing some custom m&ms cause I think they are cute lol. Any ideas are much appreciated! Thanks!

People expect a photo gap and they will mingle so don’t worry about that so much. Your photographer can help you figure out a timeline, but here’s an idea:
    12:30 bridesmaids photos
1:00 groomsmen photos 2:00 ceremony 2:30 family and couple photos 3:00/3:15 entrance and special dances 4:00 cake cutting

I would do a few non dessert appetizers as well even if it’s just cheese and crackers, fruit and veggie tray. Maybe some cookies or brownies. I love cheesecake and you can do a lot with it, maybe you can have some strawberry, chocolate, caramel sauce on the side and people can customize it the way they like.

As long as there is food available, people will not mind a gap at all - it's really expected. As far as desserts go, maybe rent a chocolate fountain or consider some kind of fruity desserts - mini apple pies, custard tarts, etc.

Photos are taken before or after the ceremony before the reception starts. A good photographer will keep it under an hour for posed photos.

Since it's a dessert reception, the cake cutting is toward the beginning. Cut and serve cake, people eat and chat for 2 hours and head out. There usually isn't any dancing (so short of a timeframe for one thing and usually held in churches that don't allow dancing) but that doesn't mean you can't if the church allows. Make sure to get it approved. Then it can be whenever you want in that time frame.
Unlike a cocktail hour before dinner, guests wait until the couple arrives to start eating.
The sky is the limit for dessert options while staying within your budget. Cheesecakes, pies/cobblers, brownies, bars, cookies, fruit platters with whipped cream type dip, veggies & crackers, sweet cream cheese balls, donuts, mousse, etc
