Destination Wedding - Getting the ball rolling

Cait, on October 28, 2021 at 2:56 PM Posted in Planning 1 7
Hi everyone!
So after months and months of dragging our feet and feebly attempting to pick a date and venue in our home town, my fiancé and I have decided to have small destination wedding! Wahoo!

We are interested in hosting our wedding at a large Italian villa. This villa can accommodate large groups of people. So we would plan on people staying at the villa and others at nearby Airbnbs/hotels. To book such a villa, we’d have to know if we would indeed have enough people interested in staying there with us for multiple nights. If yes, we will book it for a weeks stay. If not, we will book it just for the night of the wedding.
So my question is,Can I just text friends and family to see who might be interested? I just need a very rough idea before I get the ball rolling. We can’t send out STD or even pick a date unless until we have an idea.
Anyone with any thoughts, experience, or helpful perspective I thank you in advance for your advice!

There's nothing to say you can't, but I would be REALLY worried about people changing their minds later on, and then you're stuck with the bill. I also think it will be hard for people to give you a firm commitment a year out without a specific date. But if they are people that you trust 100%, and understand you are making a financial commitment based on their answer, you can take a shot! Just give serious thought to the scenario of what you would do if/when people back out, and how you would pay for their balance.

Are you planning to pay for the villa yourselves? If so, I think this is fine. If you’re wanting to know because you expect them to chip in, I’d find a different place for you and FH stay that you can afford yourselves and send normal invites. On the website or work of moth you can communicate block rooms/Airbnb suggestions.

Then you should probably determine who you are going to offer that to. It should probably be family/bridal party. Offering to pay for some people’s lodging is great but that leaves you having to pick and choose who pays and who doesn’t.

Yes, we already have decided on that. It will be family since we do not have bridal party. The issue at hand is when to ask/ let them know, as explained in my post.
    Thank you again!

I think first, decide on what season and year you’d like to have the wedding. With destination weddings you want to give people as much of a heads up as possible, especially in these times. Then you can ask your family members if they are able to / would want to come. Then you can at least have a rough idea - but keep in mind people may still back out at any point. At the end of the day I’d suggest doing what you and your FH want to do!

We just had our dream destination wedding in Spain last month and while not everyone was there that we wanted, we are still so glad we did it there and did what we wanted to do. Feel free to DM me w any other questions, happy to help! Smiley smile

Yes, I think you can text your VIPs and gage their interest and get their availability!
