Destination Wedding Invite timeline

Caitlin, on January 31, 2022 at 10:14 AM Posted in Planning 0 5

How far out from a destination wedding do you generally send invites? We're sending out save the dates within the next week or two for our January 2023 wedding in Puerto Rico. When would be a good time to send actual invites to give people time to plan/get credit cards with points/give us a good idea of who can make it and where we need to change decor or rental plans?

I'm afraid of who is going to tell me I was "wrong" to do what I did... 😵‍💫 (oh well! I did it already anyway!!! 😛) but we sent ours out 9 months ahead. Our friends tend to not have very flexible schedules so it was important to them to know how to plan their time off. 😊

That's kind of what I was thinking too. We're asking primarily family and there are some that need the time to plan financially- particularly those with kiddos.

The save the date gives guests the date and location of the wedding, so they can plan accordingly with just that information. Therefore, you don't need to send the invites any earlier than normal. With the save the date, they already know the date and the city, so they can request off from work and start saving whenever they feel is appropriate. They don't need to wait until the invitation to do so.

I think you know your closest better than anybody else 😊 also to clarify, we didn't get "save the dates" because we chose our venue straight away. No need to withhold information we already had and it cuts down costs and paper people end up tossing.
