Destination Wedding Location...help!

Lauren, on June 3, 2021 at 2:35 PM Posted in Planning 1 9

So my fiancé and I have decided we want to do a destination wedding...we plan to invite about 20-30 people and ideally want to do an all inclusive resort. We are struggling with picking a venue or even a location.

I have been to Bahamas, Los Cabos, Jamaica, and Playa del Carmen. He has been to Punta Cana and Playa del Carmen. We wanted to do a new destination for both of us and something unique...because let's face it, if our guests are expected to throw down some money, we want to wow them. But more like wow on a budget haha.

So I started looking at Costa Rica, Turks and Caicos, Curaçao, etc. and while I've found some beautiful places...I'm still so torn. I LOVE Costa Rica...but I love the rainforest and the greenery and volcano and the beauty of it...but I know many of our guests may not find that as appealing as I do. I know it's not their day but I still want to be mindful of that. There's also something beautiful about white sandy beaches and crystal clear water. And I am all for that as well...

So my thought was I would find a resort that had all the greenery and beauty mixed with the beautiful white sandy beaches and clear water....while also being all inclusive and in our budget. So where am I going? Can you help me narrow it down to an area???

For the wedding we want outdoor ceremony and venue...we prioritize food, music, and fun....I'd love some unique things that set the wedding festivities apart like fire dancers, live band, coconut drinks, a fire pit...SOMETHING.

I've looked at Sandals South Coast and while I like them...I've read so many reviews that say its not worth it for the price. So I am now considering Dreams resorts, Secrets, and similar. We wold ideally like to stay out of Mexico and Dominican Republic because many of our guests have been there already.

Can you help me????

Budget for wedding and our room + all inclusive + flights...$15,000 or less.

Secrets has a property in Costa Rica. Have you looked into that one? Costa Rican beaches are gorgeous, and the volcanic sand is actually really cool.

I have and I've looked at Dreams there...2 that are high on my list. I haven't crossed off Costa Rica as an option but I know a rainforest/jungle/volcanic sand beach may not be everyone's choice over the more traditional Caribbean beach. So I am weighing my options to see if any places/resorts marry the two....pun intended Smiley smile

Have your asked your VIPs? I honestly can't imagine anyone being so appalled by Costa Rica because it's not the exact postcard image of Caribbean beaches. And when you're there, it really isn't that different. It sounds like that's what you want but you're worried other people will be thrown off by it. Ask some people you absolutely want there and see what they say.

Second this! Our friends and family are split between states, so we'd be having a destination wedding for most guests regardless, Before deciding what to do, we tested the waters with the smallest VIP list we could. It really helped us decide on our venue/location.

We’re doing Costa Rica but it’s in San Jose so it’s all inland.

Have you checked Puerto Rico? They have some beautiful beaches & no passport required 🙂

Girl, I'm in the same boat. We are having a destination wedding in Jamaica and can't decide on a venue😭 we were originally going to get married at Sandals South Coast (GORGEOUS), but decided against it because we were told the amount of time it would take guests to get there wouldn't be worth the stress. So now we are opting to maybe get married at a resort closer to the airport or get married off resort at a separate venue (villa or other location) and then we will for sure honeymoon at Sandals South Coast. I also was told that Sandals South Coast has a vibe geared more towards relaxation and the resorts that have a more fun vibe will be located more in Ocho Rios, Negril, and Montego Bay areas. Hopefully you can decide on a destination! I honestly am at the point where I just want to hire someone to decide for me😂

We also have Sandals South Coast on our list of potentials! I don't mind the commute from the airport...it was more the expense of the resort that has made us hesitant. We wanted a vibe of relaxation for people who just love to lay out, tan, go to the entertainment shows and dinner, etc. but also have options for people who want to snorkel, scuba, do excursions and what not. I do know that Couples resorts look really nice and they have included excursions like going to Margaritaville, a Catamaran cruise etc. I was very intrigued by that resort until I found out its adults only and couples only....meaning my fiancé's mother who is single, would not be able to room alone (which is stupid imho). But also look into Secrets St James/Montego Bay/Wild Orchid! That may be a little more up your alley if you wanna be near the airport! Trust me, I feel you! There are way too many options. I would gladly hand someone our budget and ideas and just have them plan and pick for me and we just show up lol

Costa Rica is our favorite vacation spot and if we hadn't already visited we would probably get married there (we picked somewhere we haven't been, Antigua). I think guests would be pleasantly surprised by the country and the beaches are still beautiful, not crisp white, but you have mountains right there so I would definitely not count it out. The other place that reminds me of Costa Rica is St Lucia. They also aren't know for their beaches, but it has the pitons in the backdrops and you can get married with them right behind you. We were strongly considering this but we had too many guests to accommodate. The Windjammer Inn is a villa option that is beautiful, Coconut Bay is right near the airport and has a lot of perks included with booking a wedding but it is on the Atlantic side so there are no water sports. Bay Gardens is also beautiful and then there is a Sandals there as well! Good luck deciding!!
