Destination Wedding & Paying For Our Rooms - Are We Getting Duped?

Mnm1025, on March 7, 2019 at 10:49 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

Hey, hey hey! So, my fiance and I are getting married in Los Cabos, Mexico. We are paying the same price for our room (we are staying 5 days) as our guests who book under our room block. Does this seem normal? I was talking to a few women and mentioned this and they were shocked. Two of them have had destination weddings and both said they were given significant price breaks and complimentary upgrades, which makes sense. After all, we are the couple who is getting married. Thoughts? Should I say something to the resort?

We also had a big room discount & they upgraded us. But are you getting a deal on your wedding? It seems like places outside the US are so much less because they offer all-in-one wedding packages. Not sure they’d discount the rooms too?

We are paying their normal prices for the wedding. No price difference from anyone else who might have their wedding there, but not stay at the resort. Let alone bringing 80 guests to their resort. The more I think about this, the more irritated I am getting frustrated. Lol. I think I might say something... We are already paying 16k+ for the wedding, bringing 80 guests, and still have to pay $2,700 for five nights to stay there??? Hmmm....

Wow! Seems like a rip off, sorry. I guess it all depends on a resort, do you mind sharing what resort you’re dealing with? My FH and I were originally going to get married in Cabo too, but it appeared to be too expensive, and we have a small group, no more than 20 ppl. When I spoke to resorts they were all offering one perk or another - a credit towards wedding package, discount on the newlyweds room, etc.

Our hotel gives us a free room for each night we book 15 or more rooms in our hotel block. I opted to upgrade us to a suite, so instead of paying $315 per night we are paying $120 (the difference for the upgrade) since we have booked 25 rooms each night.

Thank you all for the feedback! I recently called the event planner at the resort and she is going to speak with her supervisor about creating a more attractive upgrade package for us!

They offered a level free upgrade if we book 20 rooms. But that doesn't help us, because the room that we want (our daughter toddler is coming with us), would still be very expensive.

Wow that is a big difference. We are currently booking our DW in Cancún and we are using a travel agent for the accommodations and we decided not to do the room blocks because it seemed so much more difficult. We’d have to know how many rooms, the type of rooms, the days, we’d had to pay out of pocket first.. so since we’re not doing that we are not getting any of the group amenities. Our wedding package is definitely not $16K, and our room is only about $50 price difference per night with a much much better room.. I’d definitely ask for a better deal...

Some places do, others do not. Some places are more generous than other, and some depend on how many other rooms your guests will be booking at the hotel. We are not doing a destination, but because of the number of rooms we are blocking we will be getting the 1000 sq ft suite for the cost of a standard room at the block cost. (I think it comes to $150.00/night off). We just finished our hunt for hotel room blocks so it's fresh in the mind Smiley smile

This seems like the wrong way to look at hosting your wedding. You should be treating your guests, not expecting to get free things because you got your guests to spend money at the resort.

For that many guest you should talk to a destination wedding travel agent... they normally can answer all those questions.
Ive been emailing with Barbs at Wright Travel Agency. And she’s been answering all those questions promptly.

Wow I'm doing a destination and for every 20 rooms booked I am receiving a free room and our room will be upgraded. Sorry to hear that and that is a lot of money you are paying. I haven't gone over 10K for my total and I'm having 100 guest. All inclusive , separate RD area and wedding on Beach with 4 hours private Reception, cake and decorations and Top shelf alcohol.

I’m so glad to see you say all of this I’m really leaning towards not doing a room block as well (DW in Playa del Carmen) because of all the things u mentioned. Are you worried at all that the price of the hotel will go too high or sell out? Did your TA negotiate a discount rate even though you didn’t do a block?

    Hi,

I don’t know what she did, but the room rates we got are good till June and I have been checking and they are way cheaper with my TA. I have a small guestlist and I have told everyone to book it 4 months prior to the wedding so I think we shall be good. And if they do book it before a certain date we get a free “welcome drinks” event with appetizers, and some free nights depending on how many rooms get booked at the end.
